What will you learn?

A plumbing apprenticeship teaches you the skills to install, maintain, and repair water, heating, and gas systems in homes and commercial buildings. Over four years, you alternate between on-the-job training with a registered employer and off-the-job block-release training at a College of Further Education. You develop expertise in pipework, sanitary systems, central heating, and increasingly in renewable technologies such as heat pumps and solar thermal systems. A typical week on-site involves reading technical drawings, fitting pipes and fixtures, and working alongside experienced tradespeople, while block-release weeks focus on theory, safety regulations, and practical assessments in a workshop setting. Gas installation and commissioning are covered in later phases of the apprenticeship.

Required Education

Entry to a plumbing apprenticeship requires you to be at least 16 years old and to have secured a contract with a SOLAS-registered employer, who sponsors you throughout the programme. A Leaving Certificate or Junior Cycle profile with passes in Maths and English is typically expected, and some employers prefer applicants with higher grades or relevant Transition Year experience. There is no CAO points system involved; instead, you apply directly to employers through apprenticeship.ie or trade contractors. QQI Level 5 construction or engineering modules can strengthen your application if you have completed a PLC course. Mature applicants over 18 are welcome, and there are no upper age limits. Good numeracy, a practical aptitude, and a full or provisional driving licence are advantages when approaching employers.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified plumbers in Ireland is strong and is forecast to grow significantly through the late 2020s, driven by the government's national retrofitting programme and large-scale housing construction targets. The Climate Action Plan has created particular demand for plumbers skilled in heat pump installation and low-carbon heating systems. Starting wages for newly qualified plumbers typically range from around €38,000 to €45,000 gross per year, with experienced tradespeople or self-employed contractors earning €55,000 to €75,000 or more. The shortage of skilled trades means employment prospects are excellent across all regions of Ireland.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and digital tools are beginning to influence plumbing through smart home systems, building information modelling (BIM), and diagnostic software that helps identify faults in heating and water systems remotely. As a plumber, the hands-on, site-based nature of the work means your core skills cannot be automated, though you will increasingly work with smart thermostats, connected heat pumps, and app-based building management systems. Understanding these digital interfaces will become an important part of the job, particularly in commercial and retrofitting contexts. Overall, AI presents more opportunity than threat for the trade, especially for those who embrace new renewable and smart-home technologies.

How to apply

Plumbing is a SOLAS-registered employer-led apprenticeship: you must first secure a contract with an approved employer, who then registers you via apprenticeship.ie; off-the-job training phases (typically phases 2, 4 and 6) are delivered at your regional ETB training centre. There is no CAO application and no points requirement; applicants must be at least 16 years old and meet basic literacy and numeracy standards.
