What does a HVAC & Refrigeration Service Engineer do?

As an HVAC & Refrigeration Service Engineer you install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across a wide range of Irish settings, including hospitals, hotels, offices, data centres, and food storage facilities. Your daily work involves fitting and commissioning new systems, diagnosing faults, replacing components, and carrying out scheduled servicing to keep equipment running safely and efficiently. You work with ductwork, pipework, electrical controls, refrigerants, thermostats, and complex building management systems, reading technical drawings and consulting manufacturers' manuals as a matter of course. You collaborate closely with building managers, electrical contractors, other trades, and sometimes HSE facilities teams, and you may be called out for emergency breakdowns outside normal hours. Accurate record-keeping of service history, refrigerant handling logs, and compliance checks is an important part of the role.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a HVAC & Refrigeration Service Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 on a Tuesday morning. You pull up the job schedule on your company tablet over a quick breakfast — three calls today, spread across a hotel in Portlaoise, a cold-store unit at a food distribution warehouse outside Tullamore, and a scheduled maintenance visit to a pharmaceutical office block in Athlone. You load your van with the tools and spare parts you know you will need: manifold gauges, a refrigerant recovery unit, pipe cutters, a multimeter, and a selection of filter driers and Schrader valve cores. You arrive at the hotel by eight. The kitchen refrigeration unit threw a fault code overnight and the chef is anxious about food safety. You connect your manifold gauges to the refrigeration circuit, check the system pressures against the manufacturer's datasheet, and quickly identify a low refrigerant charge caused by a small leak on a brazed joint. You isolate the system, recover the remaining refrigerant safely into your recovery cylinder — as required under F-gas regulations — repair the joint with your brazing torch, pressure-test with nitrogen, and recharge the system with the correct weight of refrigerant recorded in the logbook.

Required Education

The most direct Irish route is the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning apprenticeship, registered with SOLAS and delivered through SOLAS-approved training centres and employer placements on an 'earn and learn' basis, leading to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft. Leaving Certificate subjects that provide a strong foundation include Physics, Engineering, Construction Studies, Applied Mathematics, and Maths at Ordinary or Higher level. Alternatively, a QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC in Engineering Technology or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering from a College of Further Education can provide a pathway into a related apprenticeship or technician role. Some engineers enter through a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering at a technological university such as TU Dublin, ATU, or MTU, which can open doors to design and supervisory roles more quickly. Safe handling of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-Gas) requires an EU F-Gas certificate, and engineers working with certain refrigerants must hold relevant certification in line with Irish and EU regulations. Continuing professional development through bodies such as RACHP Ireland or Engineers Ireland is valued as technology evolves.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most engineers begin as apprentice refrigeration and air conditioning technicians, gaining on-the-job experience across installation and service work while completing their apprenticeship. After qualifying and accumulating a few years of site experience, you typically progress to a senior service engineer role, taking responsibility for complex systems, mentoring apprentices, and managing larger maintenance contracts. With further experience or a part-time Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in building services or mechanical engineering, roles in technical sales, project management, or estimating become accessible. Senior engineers with strong commercial awareness can progress to contracts manager, service manager, or regional operations positions within mechanical engineering contractors.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered building management systems and predictive maintenance platforms are increasingly being used to monitor HVAC and refrigeration plant remotely, flagging anomalies before breakdowns occur and allowing engineers to prioritise call-outs more efficiently. While these tools improve productivity and reduce emergency callouts, they do not replace the need for a qualified engineer to physically inspect, repair, and commission equipment on site. AI-assisted diagnostics may reduce time spent on routine fault-finding but place greater emphasis on engineers' ability to interpret system data and respond to more complex, non-routine failures. Overall, AI is likely to make experienced HVAC engineers more productive rather than reduce demand for their core hands-on skills.
