What does a Heating Engineer do?

As a Heating Engineer you design, install, and maintain central heating systems, boilers, and renewable heat technologies such as heat pumps and solar thermal panels in residential and commercial buildings across Ireland. Your daily work involves reading technical blueprints, fitting pipework and radiators, commissioning new heating systems, and carrying out safety inspections and servicing on existing equipment. You work with a range of fuel types including natural gas, oil, solid fuel, and electricity, and must ensure every installation meets Irish building regulations and safety standards. You collaborate closely with plumbers, electricians, construction project managers, and directly with homeowners and building facilities teams.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Heating Engineer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 a.m. Before you even leave the house, you check the job sheet on your phone. Today you have a boiler service in Clondalkin first thing, then an afternoon commissioning visit for a heat pump installation in a new-build estate in Naas. You load the van with your toolkit — pipe cutters, a flue gas analyser, pressure gauges, and a CO detector — and set off before the worst of the M50 traffic. You arrive at the Clondalkin house just after eight. The homeowner is an older woman who is worried her boiler has been making a knocking noise. You run through your service checklist: you clean the heat exchanger, check the gas pressure, test the flue integrity, and use the analyser to measure combustion readings. The noise turns out to be a faulty pump, which you replace from stock in the van. You record everything on your RGI service report — your Registered Gas Installer number must appear on all documentation — and talk the customer through what you found.

Required Education

Most Heating Engineers in Ireland enter the trade through the SOLAS Plumbing Apprenticeship, a four-year earn-and-learn programme registered through apprenticeship.ie that leads to an NFQ Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Craft. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Physics, Mathematics, and Construction Studies provide a strong practical and theoretical foundation. On completing the plumbing apprenticeship, many engineers pursue additional qualifications in gas installation (RGII registration) or oil-fired heating through OFTEC-accredited courses to expand their scope of work. Renewable energy upskilling, for example heat pump installation courses accredited through SEAI or QQI, is increasingly important as Ireland transitions to low-carbon heating. Registration with Registered Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII) is a legal requirement for any work on gas heating systems in the Republic of Ireland.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Heating Engineers begin as apprentices with a plumbing or heating contractor, gaining hands-on site experience across domestic and light commercial projects. After qualifying and obtaining RGII gas registration, many take on lead installer roles or progress to supervisory positions managing small installation teams. With experience and additional qualifications in renewable energy or building energy management, you can move into roles such as contracts manager, energy consultant, or heating system design engineer. Some experienced engineers establish their own heating and plumbing businesses, tendering for domestic retrofit contracts funded through the SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme and similar government programmes.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered diagnostic tools and smart building management systems are changing how Heating Engineers monitor and service heating equipment, with remote fault detection reducing unnecessary call-outs and enabling predictive maintenance. Digital commissioning software and AI-assisted system design tools are streamlining the planning of complex heating layouts, though hands-on installation work remains firmly human-led. Heating Engineers who embrace smart thermostat technology and connected heat pump systems will find these skills increasingly valued by clients looking to optimise energy use and reduce costs. Overall, AI enhances rather than replaces the role, making technical upskilling in digital controls an important part of ongoing professional development.
