As a steeplejack you carry out inspection, repair and maintenance work on tall structures such as industrial chimneys, church spires, towers, bridges and high-rise buildings across Ireland. Your daily tasks include rigging rope-access systems or erecting scaffolding, assessing structural damage, repairing masonry or steelwork, and applying protective coatings at significant height. You work closely with site managers, structural engineers and other tradespeople, following strict health and safety regulations throughout every job. No two days are alike: one week you may be repointing the stonework of a historic church steeple in rural Munster, and the next you may be inspecting a telecoms mast or industrial chimney in an urban setting.
Listen: a day as a Steeplejack
Your alarm goes off at 6.00 am. Today's job is repointing the upper section of a nineteenth-century limestone church spire outside Thurles, County Tipperary. You drive to site, arriving by 7.30 am, and meet the site manager and a structural engineer who completed an initial survey last week. Together you review the method statement and risk assessment — paperwork that must be signed off before a single rope goes over the parapet. By 8.00 am you and your working partner begin rigging the rope-access system. You anchor two independent kermantle ropes to a certified anchor point at the top of the spire, check every karabiner and descender, and complete the buddy check. Both of you hold IRATA rope-access qualifications, and the foreman carries out a third-party check. Nothing goes ahead until everyone is satisfied.
There is no single prescribed educational route to become a steeplejack in Ireland, but a Leaving Certificate or Junior Certificate with passes in practical subjects such as Construction Studies, Engineering or Physics provides a useful foundation. Most entry routes involve on-the-job training with an established steeplejack or specialist access contractor, supplemented by QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Construction Skills or Rope Access. The Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) certification is widely recognised by Irish employers and progresses from Level 1 through to Level 3 as you gain logged hours and experience. Safe Pass (required on all Irish construction sites), Manual Handling and relevant MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) operator cards are essential certifications to obtain early in your career. Working at Heights training certified to current Health, Safety and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations is mandatory, and you may also pursue QQI awards in Scaffolding or Rigging through ETB-linked training providers.
Most steeplejacks begin as a trainee or labourer with a specialist access or construction contractor, working under experienced operatives while completing Safe Pass, Working at Heights and IRATA Level 1 certifications. With logged rope-access hours and growing site experience you can progress to IRATA Level 2 and Level 3, taking on more complex inspections and leading small teams. Experienced steeplejacks often specialise in a particular area — such as heritage masonry restoration, telecoms infrastructure or industrial chimney maintenance — or move into supervisory and site-management roles. Some establish their own specialist access businesses, tendering for contracts with local authorities, Eircom/telecommunications companies, religious bodies and industrial clients throughout Ireland.
AI-powered drone inspection technology is increasingly used to carry out initial visual surveys of tall structures, reducing some of the preliminary climbing work that steeplejacks previously performed. However, drones cannot yet perform physical repair, masonry work or equipment rigging, meaning that skilled hands-on steeplejacks remain indispensable once a defect is identified. AI tools may assist in report writing, defect analysis and planning access strategies, making administrative tasks quicker. Overall, technology is more likely to complement the steeplejack's role by improving safety and efficiency than to replace the core physical skills the job demands.
