Roofing and Cladding Apprenticeship

Duration

Level

Outlook

What will you learn?

As a roofing and cladding apprentice, you learn to install, repair and maintain a wide range of roofing and external cladding systems, including pitched slate and tile roofs, flat roofing membranes, and metal cladding for commercial and residential buildings. You develop skills in reading construction drawings, selecting appropriate materials, and understanding weatherproofing and thermal performance requirements. Practical work is central throughout, with most of your time spent on site working alongside an experienced employer, complemented by off-the-job training blocks at an Education and Training Board (ETB) or institute. You will gain essential working-at-height safety tickets, including MEWP and harness qualifications, which are required on Irish construction sites. A typical week balances hands-on site work with technical instruction in roofing science, materials technology and health and safety.

Required Education

Entry to this apprenticeship requires you to be employed by a SOLAS-registered roofing and cladding employer before you can register. You typically need to be at least 16 years of age and hold a minimum of a Junior Cycle qualification or equivalent, though many employers prefer applicants who have completed the Leaving Certificate. Relevant Leaving Certificate subjects such as Construction Studies, Engineering, Physics or Technical Graphics are an advantage but are not formally required. There is no CAO application involved; you secure a position directly with an approved employer who then registers you with SOLAS through apprenticeship.ie. Mature applicants and those with relevant prior construction experience are welcomed, and prior learning may be recognised. Safe Pass is generally required before beginning site-based work.

Career Prospects

The outlook for qualified roofing and cladding tradespeople in Ireland is very strong, driven by chronic housing shortages, large-scale commercial development, and national retrofitting targets under the Climate Action Plan. Skilled roofers are consistently listed among the most sought-after trades on Irish construction sites, and the apprenticeship pipeline does not yet meet demand. Gross annual salaries for qualified craft workers typically range from around €40,000 to €60,000 or more, with self-employed contractors often earning considerably higher. Experienced professionals who move into supervisory, estimating or project management roles can command premium earnings.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a limited but growing role in roofing and cladding work, primarily through digital tools used for estimating, project planning and building information modelling (BIM) on larger commercial sites. Drone survey technology with AI image analysis is increasingly used by roofing companies to inspect and assess roof conditions remotely, which you may encounter as part of your professional development. The core hands-on skills of installing, weatherproofing and repairing roofs cannot be automated and remain firmly in human hands. Overall, AI is more likely to support your work through better planning tools than to displace the trade itself.
