As a Pharmacy Assistant you support registered pharmacists in the day-to-day running of a community pharmacy, helping to dispense medications, manage stock, and serve customers at the counter. You check prescriptions for accuracy, transfer medication to customers safely, and ensure that controlled substances are stored and handled according to strict regulatory procedures. Much of your work involves direct contact with the public, answering queries about over-the-counter products and directing patients to the pharmacist when clinical advice is needed. You also carry out administrative tasks such as processing payments, handling petty cash, and maintaining accurate inventory records. You work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and occasionally with GPs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals as part of a wider patient-care team.
Listen: a day as a Pharmacy Assistant
Your alarm goes off at 8:15 a.m. The pharmacy opens at 9:00, so you arrive by 8:45 to help the pharmacist unlock, switch on the dispensing computer, and check that the fridge temperature log for medications like insulin is within the required range. If the overnight log shows any deviation, you note it immediately and flag it to the pharmacist on duty before a single customer walks through the door. By 9:10 a.m. the first prescriptions are coming in. You take the paper scripts and GMS medical cards at the counter, enter patient details into the dispensing system, and print the labels. The pharmacist checks everything before any medication leaves the dispensary, but your accuracy at this stage matters enormously. A wrong date of birth or a misread dose could cause a serious problem further down the line, so you slow down and read carefully rather than rushing.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
Most pharmacy assistants in Ireland enter the role through a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Pharmacy Skills, offered by Colleges of Further Education (CFEs) through ETBs across the country. Relevant Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Maths provide a useful background, though specific LC results are not always a formal entry requirement for Level 5 courses. Some employers provide on-the-job training supported by in-house programmes or short CPD courses accredited by pharmacy bodies. A QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Pharmacy Technician studies is available for those who wish to take on greater dispensing responsibilities. Pharmacy assistants are not required to register with a statutory body such as CORU, but they work under the direct supervision and professional responsibility of a registered pharmacist who is regulated by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI). Continuing professional development is encouraged to keep up to date with new medicines, dispensing software, and health and safety requirements.
Most pharmacy assistants begin their careers in community pharmacies after completing a QQI Level 5 Pharmacy Skills course, often gaining their first experience through work placements included in the programme. With experience and further study at QQI Level 6, you can progress to the role of pharmacy technician, taking on greater responsibility in the dispensing process. Some pharmacy assistants move into supervisory or senior assistant roles within large pharmacy chains such as Boots, Lloyds, or independent groups. Others use the role as a stepping stone towards further education, for example studying a Level 8 degree in pharmacy to qualify as a pharmacist through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) or University College Cork (UCC).
AI-assisted dispensing verification tools and automated stock management systems are beginning to feature in larger Irish pharmacies, reducing the time spent on manual counting and inventory checks. However, the patient-facing, empathetic aspects of the pharmacy assistant's role — reassuring anxious customers and communicating clearly about medications — are not easily replicated by technology. Automation is more likely to change how routine tasks are carried out than to eliminate the role entirely, freeing assistants to spend more time on direct customer care. Staying familiar with evolving pharmacy software and e-health technologies will be increasingly important for pharmacy assistants in the years ahead.
