A Dental Nursing programme at NFQ Level 6 prepares you to work as a qualified dental nurse in a clinical setting. You study the anatomy of the mouth and teeth, dental materials, radiography techniques, infection prevention and control, and patient care. A significant portion of your time is spent on supervised clinical placement in private dental practices or HSE dental clinics, where you assist the dentist chairside during examinations, fillings, extractions and other procedures. A typical week combines classroom theory, skills-lab practice using dental manikins and equipment, and placement days in a real practice. Some programmes offered through ETB Colleges of Further Education are delivered part-time alongside employment in a dental setting.

Most Dental Nursing programmes require a Leaving Certificate, typically with passes in at least five subjects including English and, ideally, a science subject such as Biology or Chemistry at Ordinary level or above. Entry is competitive and providers assess candidates through interviews, as clinical aptitude and communication skills matter as much as academic results. QQI Level 5 Health Care Support or a related healthcare award can provide a strong alternative entry route for those who did not meet Leaving Certificate requirements. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcomed and may apply on the basis of relevant dental or healthcare work experience. HEAR and DARE access schemes are available through participating institutions for eligible applicants. Garda vetting and up-to-date vaccinations, including hepatitis B, are required before commencing clinical placement.
Demand for qualified dental nurses in Ireland remains consistently strong, particularly as the Government expands the Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) and rolls out free dental care for more population groups. Many graduates secure employment before completing their qualification, given the close links programmes maintain with local dental practices through placement. Salaries for newly qualified dental nurses in Ireland typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 gross per year, with experienced or senior dental nurses earning more, particularly in specialist or managerial roles.
AI is beginning to influence dentistry through tools that assist with X-ray interpretation, caries detection and treatment planning software, which dental nurses will need to be familiar with as these technologies enter practices. However, the hands-on chairside role, patient communication and instrument management aspects of dental nursing are unlikely to be automated in the near future. Dental nurses who develop digital literacy alongside their clinical skills will be well placed as Irish practices adopt more technology-assisted workflows.

How to apply
Dental Nursing at QQI Level 6 is a FET/PLC programme; applicants apply directly to the college or ETB — not through the CAO — typically requiring a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with some programmes requiring work placement in a dental setting. The Dublin Dental University Hospital programme has its own competitive application and interview process and leads to registration eligibility with the Dental Council of Ireland.
