What does a Telecoms Sales Advisor do?

As a Telecoms Sales Advisor you sell mobile phones, broadband packages, SIM plans and accessories to customers in a retail store environment. Your day involves demonstrating devices, explaining tariffs and data plans, processing transactions on a till and ensuring that displays are stocked and presented attractively. You work closely with colleagues and store managers, as well as with customers from all walks of life who may need guidance on switching networks or upgrading their handset. You are responsible for meeting individual and team sales targets, often earning commission on top of a base wage, and you regularly complete product training courses delivered by network operators and device manufacturers.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Telecoms Sales Advisor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 8:15 on a Tuesday morning. You are on a nine-to-five shift today at a telecoms retail store in a busy shopping centre in Cork. You grab a coffee, pull on your uniform polo shirt and head in, arriving just before nine to join the brief team huddle where your store manager runs through yesterday's sales figures, today's targets and any new promotions on broadband bundles or handset upgrades. The shutters go up at nine and the first hour is quieter, so you use the time to tidy the display stands, make sure demo handsets are charged and check that price tags match the current tariffs on the system. A new SIM-only plan launched overnight, so you spend fifteen minutes reading the product sheet before a customer walks in.

Required Education

There are no fixed Leaving Certificate subject requirements for this role, though English, Mathematics and Business at any level are useful for communication, numeracy and understanding commercial concepts. Most employers recruit school leavers at Leaving Certificate level and provide on-the-job and manufacturer-led training from day one. A QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sales, Retail Practice or Customer Service from a College of Further Education (PLC course) is a recognised and common route that can strengthen your application. Some advisors complete a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Retail Management or Sales while working, supporting progression into supervisory positions. No statutory professional registration is required for this occupation.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Telecoms Sales Advisors begin on the shop floor as part-time or full-time sales assistants, often straight from school or after a PLC course. With strong sales performance and product knowledge, promotion to Senior Advisor or Team Leader typically comes within two to three years. From there, progression to Store Manager or Area Manager is achievable, particularly with further study in retail management or business. Experienced professionals may also move into corporate account management or business-to-business sales roles with network operators such as Eir, Three Ireland or Vodafone Ireland.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered chatbots and self-service kiosks are handling an increasing share of routine customer queries and SIM swaps online, which reduces the volume of very simple transactions in store. However, customers still favour human advisors when making significant purchasing decisions, comparing complex bundled plans or resolving account issues, so the advisory and relationship-building aspects of the role remain important. AI tools are also being introduced to help advisors with personalised upsell recommendations and live stock information, making the role more data-informed. Overall, AI is reshaping rather than replacing the position, placing greater emphasis on consultative selling skills.
