Retail & Customer Service
As a Ticket Sales Agent you sell travel or event tickets to customers on behalf of transport operators, airlines, or entertainment venues across Ireland. Your day involves processing bookings, handling enquiries by phone, in person, or online, and matching customers with the best available tickets or travel options to suit their needs. You keep up to date with timetables, event schedules, pricing, and any last-minute changes so that customers always receive accurate information. You may also upsell additional products such as seat upgrades, travel insurance, or premium packages, and assist customers with special requirements, including accessibility needs.
Listen: a day as a Ticket Sales Agent
You arrive at the city-centre ticket office at 8:45 a.m., quarter of an hour before the shutters go up. You log into the booking system, check overnight messages, and print off the day's amended timetables for the Intercity and commuter routes. There is already a short queue forming outside. By nine o'clock the doors are open and the first customers are at the counter. Most want day-return tickets to Dublin or Cork, but one elderly man needs a wheelchair-accessible seat on the Friday evening express. You check availability on the terminal, confirm the reservation, and note his requirements in the special-assistance field so the platform staff will be ready.
There are no strict Leaving Certificate requirements for this role, though subjects such as Business, English, and a modern language are helpful. Most employers provide full on-the-job training, so entry is often possible with a Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate at any level. A QQI Level 5 award in Travel and Tourism or Customer Service, available through PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education, is a strong advantage and is frequently the route taken by those entering the sector. Short courses in reservations software or customer care, offered through ETBs and private providers, can also strengthen your application. No statutory professional registration is required for this role.
Most Ticket Sales Agents begin in a junior or front-line role with an operator such as Irish Rail, Dublin Bus, Translink, Aer Lingus, or a major entertainment venue. With experience, you can progress to a senior agent, team leader, or supervisor position overseeing a sales desk or contact centre team. From there, opportunities exist to move into operations management, revenue management, or travel consultancy roles. Further study, such as a QQI Level 6 or a degree in Tourism or Business, can open doors to management and commercial positions within the sector.
AI-powered chatbots and automated booking systems are taking over many routine enquiries and straightforward ticket purchases, which reduces demand for basic transactional tasks. However, human agents remain important for handling complex bookings, resolving complaints, assisting customers with special needs, and providing a personal service during high-demand events. AI tools are increasingly used to support agents by suggesting upsell opportunities or flagging booking errors in real time. Agents who develop strong interpersonal skills and familiarity with digital tools will remain competitive as the role evolves.
