What does a Train Driver do?

As a Train Driver you are responsible for operating passenger or freight trains safely across the Irish rail network, following all signalling instructions and operational regulations at all times. You carry out pre-departure checks on the locomotive and rolling stock, monitor gauges and controls throughout the journey, and communicate with signal operators and station staff to ensure punctual, safe arrivals and departures. In a passenger context you are directly responsible for the welfare of everyone on board, while freight drivers must account for load weights and cargo security. You work closely with Iarnród Éireann operational control centres, station staff, and infrastructure managers, often across shift patterns that include early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Train Driver

0:00 / 0:00

You sign on at Heuston Station depot at 05:45 for a morning turn. Before anything else, you collect your journal and check the notice board for any temporary speed restrictions or engineering possessions — stretches of track taken out of service overnight for maintenance — that affect your route to Portlaoise today. Your roster has been issued by Iarnród Éireann's crew management system, and you confirm your diagrams, the sequence of trains you will work across the shift. At 06:00 you walk the length of your InterCity set, checking doors, lights, cab equipment and the emergency detrainment kit. You record everything in the pre-departure examination book. Nothing is skipped; if a fault appears you phone the depot fitter before you touch the controls.

Filmed in the UK

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

There is no specific Leaving Certificate subject requirement to become a Train Driver, though subjects such as Maths, Physics, and Engineering are useful for understanding technical systems. Entry is typically through competitive recruitment by Iarnród Éireann, who run trainee driver competitions open to candidates with a good standard of general education, often a Leaving Certificate or equivalent NFQ Level 5 qualification. Successful applicants undergo a rigorous in-house training programme covering safety regulations, signalling systems, locomotive operation, and emergency procedures, leading to a formal driver licence under EU Directive 2007/59/EC, which is the statutory requirement to drive trains in Ireland. No prior rail experience is necessary as Iarnród Éireann provides all technical training internally, but candidates must pass medical, psychometric, and aptitude assessments. The overall training period typically takes around one to two years before a trainee driver is certified to operate independently.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Train Drivers begin as trainee drivers recruited directly by Iarnród Éireann, progressing to certified driver status after completing the in-house training programme. With experience, drivers can take on more complex routes, intercity services, or freight operations, and may become mentors or assessors for new trainee drivers. Senior drivers may move into supervisory or operational control roles, such as depot supervisor or train operations manager. Further progression into management within Iarnród Éireann or transport planning bodies is possible with additional qualifications.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are influencing signalling systems, predictive maintenance, and operational scheduling in the rail sector, reducing some administrative burden on drivers. While fully driverless trains exist in controlled metro environments internationally, the complexity of the Irish rail network and existing infrastructure means human drivers are expected to remain essential for the foreseeable future. AI-assisted cab technologies may support drivers with real-time hazard alerts and energy-efficient driving guidance, acting as a safety aid rather than a replacement. Overall, the role is expected to evolve rather than be displaced, with drivers requiring familiarity with increasingly sophisticated on-board technology.
