What does a Travel Agency Manager do?

As a Travel Agency Manager you oversee the day-to-day running of a travel agency, whether it is part of a national chain such as JWT or an independent operator. You lead a team of travel consultants, set and monitor sales targets, negotiate deals with airlines, hotels and tour operators, and ensure that customers receive accurate and up-to-date travel advice. You are responsible for managing budgets, reviewing financial accounts and keeping the business compliant with consumer protection and licensing requirements. Working closely with suppliers, marketing teams and your own staff, you balance commercial performance with delivering excellent customer experiences.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Travel Agency Manager

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the agency at 8:45 on a Tuesday morning, fifteen minutes before the doors open, and run through the overnight emails on the Amadeus booking system. There are two flight-change notifications from Ryanair affecting customers travelling to Lanzarote later this week, so you flag these for your consultants to action before the phones get busy. At nine o'clock the team of four consultants settles in, and you do a quick stand-up briefing at the counter. You go over yesterday's sales figures against the monthly target, remind everyone about a new Sunway promotional rate for the Canaries, and check that all customer documents posted yesterday have been logged. One consultant has a question about ATOL protection for a customer booking a package through a UK-based operator, and you talk her through the consumer protection implications under Irish contract law.

Required Education

There is no single mandatory qualification for this role, but most Travel Agency Managers hold at least a QQI Level 6 award or a Level 7/8 degree in Travel and Tourism, Tourism Management, Business or Hospitality Management. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Geography, Business, Economics, Modern Languages and Mathematics. PLC courses at Colleges of Further Education — such as a QQI Level 5 or 6 Travel and Tourism programme — provide a practical alternative route, and many managers work their way up from travel consultant roles. Degrees such as a Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management are offered at TU Dublin, ATU and other technological universities. No statutory registration body oversees travel agency managers, but membership of bodies such as the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) is regarded as a mark of professionalism in the sector.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most people enter the travel industry as a travel consultant or reservations agent, often after completing a PLC or degree in tourism or business. With a few years of strong sales performance and growing product knowledge, you can progress to a senior consultant or team leader position. Appointment to branch manager or agency manager typically follows several years of demonstrated commercial and leadership ability, sometimes supported by further study such as a part-time business degree or a Springboard+ course. Experienced managers may go on to regional or national operations roles within larger travel groups, or establish their own independent agency.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered booking platforms and chatbots are automating routine enquiries, price comparisons and standard itinerary generation, reducing the volume of straightforward transactions handled by consultants. However, Travel Agency Managers who focus on complex, bespoke or high-value travel — such as honeymoons, group tours and accessible travel — are less exposed to direct automation, as clients still value human expertise and reassurance. AI tools can also assist managers in analysing sales data, forecasting demand and personalising marketing campaigns more efficiently. Managers who embrace these tools while sharpening their team's consultative and relationship-building skills will be best placed to keep the agency competitive.
