What does an Underwater Construction Supervisor do?

As an Underwater Construction Supervisor you oversee marine and subsea civil engineering works such as harbour developments, bridge pillar installations, canal lock construction, and offshore renewable energy foundations. You plan and implement dive operations, briefing commercial divers on their tasks and ensuring every aspect of the work conforms to agreed dive plans and safety regulations. Your day involves inspecting construction materials and equipment before use, monitoring work progress beneath the surface, and maintaining detailed records of operations. You collaborate closely with marine contractors, civil engineers, health and safety officers, and client representatives to keep projects on schedule and within specification.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Underwater Construction Supervisor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 05:30. You are based on a marine construction barge moored off the coast of Wexford, where your crew is installing concrete scour-protection mattresses around the foundation piles of a new offshore wind turbine. You check the Met Éireann marine forecast and the tidal chart before anything else, because a current above one knot means the dive team stays on deck. Conditions look manageable, so you radio the vessel skipper and confirm a 07:00 water entry. By 06:30 you are in the site office container running the pre-dive briefing. You talk your team of four commercial divers through the dive plan, task allocation, bottom time limits, and the emergency procedures specific to today's depth of eighteen metres. Every diver signs the briefing sheet. You check the dive supervisor's log from the previous shift and note that one of the hydraulic torque tools was returned with a slow leak — you quarantine it immediately and source a replacement from the equipment store.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Physics, Mathematics, and Construction Studies provides a solid foundation for entry into this field. Most practitioners hold at least an NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related construction discipline, typically from a technological university such as TU Dublin, ATU, or MTU. A professional commercial diving qualification accredited to the relevant European diving standard (IMCA or equivalent) is essential, as supervisors must have direct experience as a commercial diver before moving into a supervisory role. Many professionals also hold or work towards an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor in Civil or Structural Engineering to strengthen their technical credibility. Health and safety certification such as a Safe Pass card and construction-specific CSCS qualifications are required on Irish sites, and supervisors are expected to maintain current first-aid and dive-medic training. Membership or chartered status with Engineers Ireland is an advantage for career progression.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most people in this role begin as qualified commercial divers, gaining several years of hands-on experience on marine construction projects before moving into a supervisory position. With a track record of successful project delivery, you may progress to Project Manager or Marine Operations Manager within a specialist marine contracting company. Further advancement can lead to senior roles such as Contracts Manager or Head of Marine Engineering, particularly if you hold or acquire chartered engineering status. Some experienced supervisors move into consultancy, working with port authorities, the National Roads Authority, or offshore energy developers in an advisory capacity.

AI Impact on the job

AI-assisted survey and inspection tools, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) equipped with computer-vision software, are increasingly used to assess subsea structures, reducing the number of dives required for routine inspection work. Supervisors who can interpret data from these digital tools and integrate them into dive planning will be at an advantage, as the role evolves to blend traditional diving oversight with remotely operated technology. AI-driven project management platforms can assist with scheduling, resource allocation, and compliance monitoring, freeing supervisors to focus on complex, hands-on decision-making. However, the physical, safety-critical, and highly variable nature of underwater construction means that experienced human supervision remains indispensable for the foreseeable future.
