What will you learn?

A Construction Management degree prepares you to plan, organise, and oversee building and civil engineering projects from initial design through to handover. You study project planning, cost control, site safety, contract law, and sustainable construction methods, with strong emphasis on Building Information Modelling (BIM) and modern construction technologies. Specialisms typically include residential development, infrastructure, and commercial construction. A typical week combines lectures, design studio sessions, and group project work, and most programmes include a structured industry placement in third or fourth year with a contractor or developer. Erasmus exchange opportunities are available at some institutions, and graduates often have professional experience on live construction sites before they finish their degree.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish at Ordinary level, though Higher-level Mathematics is strongly preferred and may be required on some programmes. CAO points for Construction Management at NFQ Level 8 are typically moderate, making it accessible compared to many engineering programmes. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Higher-level Mathematics, Physics, Technology, and Business. If you do not meet direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET/PLC award in Construction Studies or Engineering can provide a progression route onto the degree programme. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds. Some applicants enter via a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor programme and progress to Level 8 on successful completion.

Career Prospects

The outlook for Construction Management graduates in Ireland is very positive, driven by sustained government investment in housing, healthcare infrastructure, and energy transition projects. Graduate salaries typically start in the region of €35,000–€42,000 and rise significantly with experience, with experienced project managers earning €65,000–€90,000 or more. Accreditation by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) strengthens graduate employability and supports pathways to chartered status. Employment rates for graduates from Irish programmes are consistently high, with many securing roles during their industry placement year.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and digital tools are already reshaping construction management, particularly through AI-assisted project scheduling, predictive risk analysis, and automated progress monitoring using drone and sensor data on site. BIM platforms are increasingly integrating machine-learning features that help managers identify design clashes, forecast cost overruns, and optimise resource allocation. As a construction manager, you will need strong digital literacy alongside traditional site skills, as AI tools are becoming standard in tendering, planning, and project reporting. However, the people-management, on-site decision-making, and contractual judgement aspects of the role remain firmly human-led.
