What will you learn?

Game Art and Design at Bachelor level combines visual art, digital design, and interactive technology to prepare you for careers in the games industry. You will develop skills in 3D modelling, character and environment art, concept design, and level design, working within industry-standard engines such as Unreal and Unity. A typical week might involve studio sessions creating 3D assets, lectures on game history and theory, and collaborative projects where you work in small teams replicating professional studio pipelines. Many programmes include work placement modules with Irish or international studios, giving you real production experience. By graduation, you will have a professional portfolio that demonstrates your abilities across a range of game art specialisms.

Required Education

Entry typically requires the Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including English at Ordinary level or above. Creative or technical subjects such as Art, Design and Communication Graphics, or Construction Studies are an advantage, though a strong portfolio submitted at interview is usually weighted heavily in admissions decisions. CAO points for programmes at IADT and ATU are generally moderate to high, reflecting demand for these courses. If you do not meet Leaving Certificate requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Art and Design, Animation, or Multimedia can provide a recognised progression route into the second year of some programmes. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for skilled game artists in Ireland has grown steadily, driven by the expansion of international studios in Dublin and the broader digital media sector. Graduates with strong portfolios and engine experience are competitive for entry-level roles within six to twelve months of graduating. Starting salaries for junior artists in Irish studios typically range from approximately €28,000 to €38,000 gross per year, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. The global remote-work market widens your options significantly, though competition for roles at larger studios remains strong.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools such as generative image models and AI-assisted texturing are increasingly part of the game production workflow, and you will be expected to understand how to use and evaluate these tools critically. AI can accelerate concept iteration and asset generation, but creative direction, technical polish, and bespoke level design still require skilled human artists. Studios are beginning to integrate AI-driven procedural generation into environment design pipelines, making technical adaptability an important graduate skill. Understanding the ethical and intellectual property questions raised by AI-generated content is becoming a relevant area of professional knowledge for artists in this field.
