What will you learn?

Studying physiology at degree level means exploring how the human body functions at every scale, from individual cells and tissues through to complex organ systems such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and nervous systems. You will spend a significant portion of your time in well-equipped laboratories, carrying out experiments on topics such as cardiac electrophysiology, lung function testing and neurophysiology. Lectures are complemented by tutorials, data analysis sessions and increasingly by computer-based modelling of biological systems. Many programmes include a research project in your final year, giving you hands-on experience of experimental design and scientific writing. Some courses offer opportunities for short research placements with hospital departments, Teagasc or biomedical companies, and Erasmus exchanges are available in certain institutions.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, typically onto a broad science programme in first or second year before specialising in physiology. You will generally need a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English and two or more science or mathematics subjects; Higher-level Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry are strongly advantageous. CAO points for science courses leading to physiology specialisation at TCD and UCC are competitive to high, reflecting strong demand. If you do not meet LC requirements directly, a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Science or Health Science can provide a progression route to Level 7 or 8 programmes, with some institutions offering direct Level 8 entry to mature applicants. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student CAO pathway, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for students from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for Clinical Measurement Physiologists within the HSE has grown steadily as the health service expands diagnostic capacity, and CORU registration pathways are evolving for this profession. Ireland's thriving MedTech and pharmaceutical sectors provide strong graduate employment opportunities in clinical research and product development. Graduates who pursue postgraduate study or graduate-entry medicine generally find good prospects, though competition for medical school places remains intense. Overall, the employment outlook for physiology graduates in Ireland is positive, particularly for those willing to combine the degree with further professional training.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is already transforming physiological research and clinical measurement, with machine-learning algorithms being used to interpret ECG recordings, analyse sleep studies and detect patterns in continuous patient monitoring data. As a physiology graduate you will increasingly be expected to work alongside AI-assisted diagnostic tools rather than perform purely manual analysis. Understanding the biological principles behind these data streams will remain essential, as clinicians and researchers need to critically evaluate AI outputs and identify errors. The degree's strong emphasis on data analysis and research methodology provides a sound foundation for adapting to these technological changes.

How to apply

Apply through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February (or 1 March for the late application) for undergraduate entry; Physiology is typically offered as a named degree or as a pathway within a broad Science entry programme, so check individual college prospectuses for the specific CAO code. Some programmes use a common Science entry with Physiology chosen as a major in later years.
