What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 programme introduces you to the science and practice of health and fitness instruction. You will study topics such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, fitness testing, and exercise programming for a range of clients. Practical work is central to the course — you will spend time in a gym setting, designing and delivering exercise sessions under supervision, and may complete a work placement with a local fitness centre, sports club, or leisure facility. A typical week mixes classroom theory, gym-based practical sessions, and portfolio assignments. By the end of the year, you will have a solid foundation for working as a fitness instructor or progressing to a higher-level sport and exercise science programme.

Required Education

Entry to QQI Level 5 Health and Fitness programmes typically requires a Leaving Certificate (or equivalent), with passes in English and a science subject being an advantage. Some Colleges of Further Education may accept Junior Cycle results with relevant experience, particularly for mature applicants. No specific Higher-level Leaving Certificate subject is usually required at this level, making it accessible to students who did not achieve the CAO points needed for a Level 7 or Level 8 degree. Mature students (aged 23 or over) can apply directly to the college without formal Leaving Certificate results. HEAR and DARE access schemes may also apply through the CAO for those using QQI awards to progress to higher education.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified fitness professionals in Ireland has remained steady, with growth in private gym membership and community wellness programmes supporting ongoing employment. However, the fitness instruction sector is competitive at entry level, and progression in pay and responsibility often requires further qualifications or specialisation. Many graduates move relatively quickly into part-time or self-employed personal training roles while pursuing higher education. Gross annual salaries for gym instructors in Ireland typically range from around €24,000 to €32,000, with experienced personal trainers earning more through self-employment.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-driven fitness apps, wearable technology, and automated training platforms are changing how exercise programmes are designed and monitored. As a fitness professional, you will need to understand how to interpret data from devices such as heart rate monitors and GPS trackers, and use digital tools to support client programming. While AI can personalise workout recommendations at scale, it cannot replace the motivational, observational, and hands-on skills of a qualified instructor working directly with clients. Staying up to date with technology will be an increasingly important part of working in this sector.
