A Housing Studies degree at TU Dublin equips you with a thorough understanding of housing policy, law, finance and management within the Irish context. You will study how housing is planned, allocated and managed across local authorities, approved housing bodies (AHBs) and the private rented sector. Modules cover tenancy law, homelessness services, estate management, social housing policy and community development. Practical placements with local authorities, AHBs or housing charities are a central feature, giving you direct professional experience. A typical week combines lectures on housing legislation and policy with case-study seminars, site visits and placement days, making the programme highly applied and professionally relevant.

Entry is typically through the CAO, with Leaving Certificate requirements including a minimum number of O6/H7 passes including English and Mathematics. CAO points for this programme are generally moderate, reflecting its specialist vocational focus. Applicants with a relevant QQI Level 5 or 6 award in community development, public administration or social studies may apply through the FET/QQI links route. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to TU Dublin through the mature-student pathway, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are also available. Many students are already employed in local authorities or AHBs and study on a part-time or blended basis supported by their employer.
Demand for qualified housing professionals in Ireland remains strong given the ongoing national housing crisis and the continued expansion of AHBs and local authority housing programmes. Graduates with a formal qualification in housing studies are well positioned for progression into senior housing management roles over time. Salaries for Housing Officers in local authorities typically range from approximately €35,000 to €55,000 gross per annum, rising further at management level. The sector is relatively stable as a public-service and voluntary-sector field, with consistent graduate employment rates.
AI tools are beginning to assist in housing needs assessments, waiting-list management and predictive modelling of homelessness risk, which are areas housing professionals will need to engage with critically. Data analytics platforms can improve the efficiency of allocations processes and estate management reporting. However, the core work of housing officers — working with vulnerable households, exercising statutory discretion and managing complex tenancy situations — remains firmly human-led and is unlikely to be automated. Understanding how to interpret and apply AI-generated insights responsibly will become an increasingly useful skill in this profession.
