As a Property Assistant you support estate agents and property managers with the day-to-day running of a busy office. Your responsibilities include scheduling and accompanying clients on property viewings, maintaining property listings, preparing documentation such as rental agreements and sale contracts, and recording financial transactions. You liaise with buyers, sellers, landlords, and tenants by phone, email, and in person, ensuring they receive accurate and timely information. You work closely with senior estate agents, solicitors, and mortgage advisers, and you play a key role in keeping the office organised and running smoothly.
Listen: a day as a Property Assistant
You arrive at the estate agency office at half eight, fifteen minutes before the phones start ringing. You make a quick coffee, open the property management software, and check overnight enquiries submitted through the agency website. There are four new rental applications and a request for a second viewing on a three-bed semi in Portlaoise. You log each one, update the relevant listings on Daft.ie and the agency's own site, and flag the viewing request for the senior agent who handles that property. By nine o'clock the phones are busy. A prospective tenant rings to ask about a two-bed apartment in the town centre. You check the listing details, confirm the monthly rent, the BER rating, and whether pets are permitted, then schedule a viewing for Thursday afternoon. All of this goes straight into the shared diary so the agent can see it instantly.
A Leaving Certificate is the typical minimum requirement, and subjects such as Business, Maths, and English at Higher or Ordinary level are particularly useful. Many entrants come through a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Business Administration, Real Estate, or Property Services, available at Colleges of Further Education across Ireland. Some Property Assistants progress to a Level 7 or Level 8 degree in Property Economics, Real Estate, or Business Studies at institutions such as TU Dublin or ATU. Anyone involved in property sales, lettings, or property management in Ireland must be licensed by the Property Services Regulatory Authority (PSRA), and working as a Property Assistant under a licensed employer is a common route to building the experience needed to obtain your own PSRA licence. Ongoing CPD is expected once you are working in the sector.
Most Property Assistants begin in a support role within an estate agency or property management company, gaining practical experience across residential or commercial property. With a few years of experience and the relevant PSRA licence, you can progress to the role of Negotiator or Junior Estate Agent, handling your own portfolio of properties. Further progression can lead to roles such as Senior Negotiator, Branch Manager, or Property Manager, particularly in larger agencies or property management firms. Some experienced professionals go on to establish their own PSRA-licensed agency or move into property investment, development, or valuation.
AI tools are increasingly used to generate property listings, automate appointment scheduling, and analyse market data, which streamlines some routine tasks for Property Assistants. Chatbots and automated email systems can handle initial client enquiries, freeing you to focus on more complex client interactions and administrative work. However, the interpersonal and trust-based nature of property transactions means that human judgement and client-facing skills remain essential and are not easily automated. Property Assistants who embrace digital tools and property technology platforms will find their productivity and value to employers significantly enhanced.
