What will you learn?

On this QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Laboratory Techniques you develop hands-on skills in chemical, biological and environmental analysis carried out in properly equipped laboratory settings. You learn to operate analytical instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, chromatography systems and microscopes, and you practise Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) documentation throughout. Modules typically cover microbiology, chemistry, quality assurance and health and safety in the lab environment. A significant portion of your week is spent at the bench conducting experiments, recording results and interpreting data. Many programmes include a work placement with a pharmaceutical, food testing or environmental company, giving you direct industry experience before you graduate.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 6 programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English and a science subject such as Biology, Chemistry or Physics; Higher-level science is an advantage. Some colleges accept applicants with a relevant QQI Level 5 Science or Laboratory Skills certificate in lieu of Leaving Certificate results, making this a strong progression route from PLC study. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may be considered without standard entry requirements, subject to interview. HEAR and DARE supplementary admission schemes may apply at participating Colleges of Further Education. Employer-sponsored routes also exist where a student is placed with a company from the outset, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector.

Career Prospects

Ireland's pharmaceutical and biopharma sector is one of the largest employers of laboratory staff in Europe, with major multinationals operating across Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford, meaning demand for qualified lab technicians remains consistently strong. Entry-level gross salaries typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 per year, with experienced QC technicians earning €40,000 or more. The food testing and environmental compliance sectors provide additional employment stability. Graduates who perform well in industry often find employers willing to sponsor further study, enhancing long-term career prospects.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and automation are increasingly used in laboratory environments to process high-throughput data, flag anomalies in quality control results and operate robotic liquid-handling systems. As a laboratory technician you will need to work alongside these tools, understanding their outputs and validating results rather than performing every step manually. However, the need for human oversight of GLP documentation, instrument maintenance and complex sample handling means core practical skills remain essential and will not be fully automated in the near future. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and basic data analysis software is becoming an expected part of the role.

How to apply

Applications for QQI Level 6 Laboratory Techniques programmes at Colleges of Further Education are made directly to the individual college or through the relevant ETB, not through the CAO; applicants typically need a Leaving Certificate or QQI Level 5 qualification in a science-related area, and some colleges use fetchcourses.ie as a central FET application portal. No CAO points apply to this level.
