What will you learn?

This course introduces you to mental health care from a community-based perspective, exploring how people experience and recover from mental health difficulties in everyday settings. You will study topics such as the recovery model, crisis intervention, active listening, and mental health legislation in Ireland. A significant part of the course involves practical work placement, typically with voluntary organisations or HSE community mental health teams, where you put communication and support skills into practice. You will also learn about the social determinants of mental health, including poverty, housing, and social isolation, and how these affect communities. A typical week combines classroom learning, group discussions, reflective exercises, and hours in placement, building both knowledge and personal resilience.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 programme is generally through a Leaving Certificate, with passes in a minimum of five subjects including English. No highly specific subject requirements apply, though subjects such as Biology, Home Economics, or SPHE can be helpful background. Many providers accept applicants without a full Leaving Certificate if they can demonstrate relevant life or voluntary experience, and mature applicants aged 23 or over are actively welcomed. Some ETBs may conduct an interview as part of the selection process to assess suitability for work in a caring role. Applicants with a disability or from disadvantaged backgrounds may access support through DARE or HEAR schemes where linked Higher Education progression is involved.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Demand for community-based mental health support workers in Ireland has grown steadily, reflecting national policy priorities around moving care from inpatient settings into the community. HSE community mental health teams and a wide range of non-governmental organisations continue to recruit at this level. Gross starting salaries for support worker roles typically range from around €28,000 to €34,000 per year, depending on the employer and experience. Those who progress to further qualifications can move into more senior or specialist roles with improved earning potential.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are beginning to appear in mental health support through digital well-being apps and early screening tools, but the relational and human elements of community mental health work are not easily replicated by technology. You will need to be aware of AI-driven supports that service users may already be using and understand their limitations and risks. Administrative tasks such as care planning documentation may increasingly involve digital systems, so basic digital literacy is becoming important. The core skills of empathy, human connection, and crisis response remain firmly in human hands and are unlikely to be displaced.
