What will you learn?

This degree prepares you to assess, treat and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries, with a strong focus on soft-tissue therapy, exercise prescription and return-to-play protocols. You cover anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, injury assessment, taping and strapping, and rehabilitation planning across the four years. A typical week combines lectures and anatomy labs with practical hands-on clinic sessions where you treat fellow students and real clients under supervision. Placement modules send you into GAA clubs, rugby academies, athletics organisations and private physiotherapy clinics, giving you real-world experience. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in Europe. By graduation you are competent in designing and delivering injury prevention and recovery programmes for recreational and elite athletes.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, with most programmes requiring a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects including English and a science subject such as Biology or Physics. Higher-level Maths or Biology is strongly recommended, and some institutions specify a science subject at Higher level. CAO points for these programmes tend to be moderate to competitive, reflecting growing demand. If you do not meet the Leaving Cert requirements directly, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Sport, Exercise or Health Studies can provide a recognised progression route into Year 1 or Year 2. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply through the mature applicant route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support access for students from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

Demand for sports therapy and rehabilitation professionals in Ireland has grown steadily alongside increased participation in community sport and greater awareness of injury prevention. Graduates with strong placement records and additional certifications such as personal training or dry needling tend to find employment relatively quickly. Many work in a portfolio of roles, combining clinic work, club cover and self-employment, particularly in the early years of their career. Salaries for newly qualified sports therapists in Ireland typically range from around €28,000 to €36,000 gross per year, rising with experience and specialisation.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-powered movement analysis tools and wearable sensor technology are increasingly used in sports rehabilitation to objectively track an athlete's recovery and flag re-injury risk, skills you will encounter during placements. Automated video gait analysis software can assist in biomechanical assessments, reducing the time needed for manual observation. However, the hands-on, relationship-based nature of soft-tissue therapy and patient assessment means that human clinical judgement remains central and is unlikely to be replaced. Familiarity with these digital tools will be a practical advantage when entering the job market.
