What will you learn?

This MSc equips you with advanced knowledge and practical skills to address the urgent challenges of climate change, environmental sustainability and resource management. You will study topics such as carbon accounting, circular economy principles, climate policy and environmental law, alongside quantitative research methods. Modules are grounded in real-world application, with many programmes including a research dissertation, industry placement or live consultancy project with companies, local authorities or NGOs. A typical week combines lectures and seminars with data analysis, stakeholder engagement workshops and fieldwork. Some programmes offer Erasmus+ mobility opportunities, allowing you to study briefly at a European partner institution working on comparable environmental challenges.

Required Education

Entry to an NFQ Level 9 MSc in Sustainability and Climate Action typically requires an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree (minimum 2.2, preferably 2.1) in a relevant discipline such as environmental science, geography, engineering, business, agriculture or a cognate field. Graduates from less directly related backgrounds — such as law, economics or social science — are often considered if they can demonstrate relevant professional experience or a strong personal statement. There is no single Leaving Certificate requirement at postgraduate level, though a strong second-level grounding in Geography, Biology, Chemistry or Mathematics is advantageous. Mature applicants with significant relevant work experience in sustainability, local government, energy or corporate ESG roles may apply under mature-entry provisions. Some programmes at ATU may accept QQI Level 8 Higher Diploma graduates as a bridging route. International applicants require recognised English language proficiency such as IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Career Prospects

Demand for sustainability professionals in Ireland has grown sharply as CSRD reporting requirements, the National Climate Action Plan and corporate net-zero commitments take effect, and this trend is expected to continue through the late 2020s. Graduate salaries typically range from approximately €38,000 to €55,000 at entry level, rising to €60,000–€85,000 or more for experienced specialists and managers in the corporate or consultancy sectors. Public-sector roles in local authorities and agencies tend to offer structured salary scales with good job security. The skills shortage in climate finance, carbon accounting and life-cycle assessment in particular means well-qualified graduates are strongly placed in the current Irish labour market.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and data analytics tools are increasingly used in sustainability for tasks such as carbon footprint modelling, satellite-based environmental monitoring and automated ESG data aggregation for CSRD reporting. This MSc will likely expose you to relevant software platforms and data literacy skills that complement these technologies rather than replace professional judgement. Roles requiring stakeholder engagement, policy interpretation and ethical decision-making remain firmly human-led. Overall, AI is expected to enhance the efficiency and scope of sustainability work rather than reduce demand for qualified professionals.
