What does a Peatland Restoration Officer do?

As a Peatland Restoration Officer you plan and implement projects to rewet, restore and monitor Ireland's raised and blanket bogs, working to reverse decades of drainage and turf cutting. You survey vegetation and hydrology, analyse environmental data, and assess the impact of restoration measures on carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Day-to-day work takes you into the field to oversee contractors installing dams and blocking drains, as well as into the office to write reports, apply for funding and liaise with landowners, Teagasc advisors and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff. You may also deliver community outreach events and engage with local farmers, schools and heritage groups to build understanding of peatland ecology and climate action goals.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Peatland Restoration Officer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:00 on a grey Tuesday morning in County Roscommon. You check the weather app before anything else — heavy rain is forecast for the afternoon, which will affect whether the contractor can continue blocking drains on the cutover bog site you are supervising this week. You pack your field kit: waterproof notebook, GPS unit, water-level dipstick, waders and a copy of the restoration management plan for the site. By 8:30 you are at the office, a shared workspace in a local authority building, replying to emails from the National Parks and Wildlife Service about a monitoring report that is overdue and from a landowner in Connemara who has questions about the LIFE Bogs Ireland funding scheme. You spend thirty minutes updating a spreadsheet tracking water-table readings across twelve monitoring wells on two separate bog sites, then print off today's site map.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate including Biology, Geography and Chemistry at Higher level is an excellent foundation for entry into this field. Most Peatland Restoration Officers hold an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Geography or Natural Resource Management, available at universities including UCC, University of Galway, UCD, and technological universities such as ATU and TUS. Some entrants hold a Level 9 postgraduate qualification such as an MSc in Environmental Science, Wetland Science or Climate Action, which can be particularly advantageous for specialist or senior roles. Graduates sometimes build relevant experience through NPWS seasonal ranger contracts, voluntary conservation work with bodies such as the Irish Peatland Conservation Council, or Springboard+ upskilling programmes in environmental sustainability. No single statutory registration body governs this role, but membership of professional bodies such as the Ecological Association of Ireland or the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) is valued by employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many people begin in this field through seasonal or contract positions with the NPWS, Bord na Móna's ecological team or environmental consultancies, building field survey and project management experience. With a few years of demonstrated expertise, you can progress to a permanent Peatland Restoration Officer or Environmental Officer post within a government department, a semi-state body or an environmental NGO. Further advancement may lead to roles such as Senior Conservation Scientist, Habitat Restoration Programme Manager or Policy Advisor, particularly for those who complete a Level 9 qualification or accumulate specialist knowledge in carbon accounting and EU funding mechanisms. At the most senior level, some professionals move into national policy development or advisory roles within the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered tools are improving the analysis of large hydrological and biodiversity datasets, allowing Peatland Restoration Officers to track restoration outcomes more efficiently and model future habitat conditions with greater accuracy. Remote sensing platforms using machine learning can now map peat depth, water-table levels and vegetation cover at landscape scale, reducing the need for some manual fieldwork. However, on-the-ground ecological judgement, stakeholder negotiation and adaptive site management remain tasks that require human expertise and local knowledge. Overall, AI is expected to enhance rather than replace this profession, freeing officers to focus on complex decision-making, community engagement and policy work.
