This course places you at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary design, exploring weaving, screen printing, digital printing, knitting, and embroidery alongside surface pattern and material experimentation. You study colour theory, design history, sustainability in textiles, and the cultural significance of Irish craft traditions such as tweed and linen. Practical studio work forms the backbone of your week, with time spent on looms, digital Jacquard equipment, and CAD software for repeat pattern design. Industry placements connect you with Irish brands in fashion, interiors, and heritage textiles, and some programmes offer Erasmus exchanges to European design schools. By graduation you will have developed a strong portfolio and the technical fluency to work across handcraft and industrial processes.
Entry is typically through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English. Points requirements are moderate to high, reflecting competition for limited studio places at NCAD and ATU. Art and Design at Higher level is strongly recommended and often expected, while subjects such as Home Economics, Craft & Design, or Biology can be beneficial. Applicants to NCAD must submit a portfolio of creative work as part of the admissions process, and ATU campuses may hold interview or portfolio review days. QQI Level 5 or 6 awards in Art and Design, Fashion, or Textiles from a College of Further Education provide a recognised progression route for those without traditional Leaving Certificate grades. Mature student, HEAR, and DARE access schemes are available and actively supported at both institutions.
Demand for skilled textile designers with both handcraft and digital competencies is steady in Ireland, particularly as Irish lifestyle, interiors, and fashion brands invest in design-led identity. The growth of sustainable and locally produced textiles has opened new opportunities for graduates who understand ethical sourcing and slow-fashion principles. Freelance and portfolio careers are common in this field, and graduates who build strong online presences and industry networks tend to find consistent work. Starting salaries typically range from around €26,000 to €32,000 gross per year, with experienced designers or those running their own studios earning considerably more.
AI-assisted pattern generation and generative design tools are increasingly used in surface design workflows, allowing designers to iterate colourways and repeat structures far more rapidly than by hand alone. You will be expected to critically engage with these tools while also maintaining deep craft knowledge, as clients and studios still value the authenticity of handmade and artisan processes. AI is also beginning to influence trend forecasting and supply chain decisions in the wider textiles industry. Graduates who can combine traditional technical skills with an understanding of digital and AI-assisted tools will be best placed in a competitive market.
