This QQI Level 6 programme trains you to operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants safely and effectively. You study the physical, chemical, and biological processes that make water safe to drink and treat wastewater before it is returned to the environment. Practical laboratory work is central to the course — you learn to take water samples, carry out quality tests, and interpret results against EPA drinking-water standards. A typical week includes hands-on sessions in laboratory analysis, process control, and plant maintenance alongside classroom theory in environmental science and health and safety. Many programmes include site visits to Uisce Éireann facilities or industrial treatment plants, and some offer work placement with utility or industrial employers.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English and preferably Science or Agricultural Science. Higher-level Mathematics or Physics is an advantage but is not always mandatory at this level. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may be admitted without meeting standard Leaving Certificate requirements, and HEAR and DARE access routes are available through participating ETB colleges. Applicants who have completed a relevant QQI Level 5 certificate in Science, Environmental Science, or Engineering Technology may also gain direct entry to this Level 6 programme through progression links. Some ETB colleges accept applicants with relevant trade or industry experience, particularly those already working in utilities or local authority water services.
Demand for qualified water and wastewater treatment operatives in Ireland is strong and growing, driven by significant investment in water infrastructure under the National Development Plan and Uisce Éireann's capital works programme. The sector faces an ongoing skills shortage, meaning graduates with a QQI Level 6 qualification and practical experience are actively recruited. Starting salaries for Treatment Plant Operators typically range from approximately €30,000 to €38,000 gross per year, rising with experience and additional qualifications. Job security in this sector is generally high, as water services are an essential public utility regardless of broader economic conditions.
AI and automated monitoring systems are increasingly being integrated into water and wastewater treatment plants, with smart sensors and SCADA systems enabling real-time process optimisation and fault detection. As a technician, you will need to understand how to interpret data generated by these systems rather than rely solely on manual sampling routines. Predictive maintenance tools powered by machine learning are beginning to reduce unplanned plant downtime, which is changing how maintenance schedules are planned and managed. However, on-site operational judgement, regulatory compliance, and hands-on plant management remain tasks that require skilled human technicians, so the role is evolving rather than being displaced.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.

How to apply
QQI Level 6 Water and Wastewater Treatment programmes are delivered through ETB Colleges of Further Education and are not part of the CAO system; applicants apply directly to their local ETB or college, often through fetchcourses.ie. Entry requirements are typically a QQI Level 5 qualification in a relevant area (e.g. Environmental or Engineering Science) or equivalent work experience, and some providers require a learner interview.
