This MSc explores the psychological principles that shape behaviour in the workplace, covering how people are selected, motivated, developed, and managed within organisations. You study areas such as psychometric assessment, leadership, organisational change, employee wellbeing, and work design. Practical modules often involve real consultancy projects, research placements, or case studies with industry partners, giving you hands-on experience of applying theory to live organisational challenges. A typical week might include lectures on occupational testing, small-group seminars analysing case studies, and independent research for your thesis or applied project. Some programmes offer Erasmus exchange opportunities or access to PSI-accredited practitioner pathways, positioning you for professional registration as a psychologist in occupational settings.
Entry to this postgraduate programme typically requires an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree (minimum 2.1) in psychology, business psychology, or a cognate discipline such as human resource management or behavioural science. Your undergraduate degree should ideally include foundational modules in research methods and statistics, as quantitative and qualitative skills are central to the MSc. Applicants from non-psychology backgrounds may be considered if they demonstrate relevant work experience or supplementary study. Mature applicants with substantial HR, organisational development, or related professional experience are welcomed by most universities and can make a strong case through personal statement and interview. Some programmes, particularly those with PSI accreditation pathways, may require an interview or written submission as part of the selection process.
Demand for professionals who can apply psychological evidence to people management and organisational effectiveness has grown steadily in Ireland, driven by expanding HR functions in multinational companies and increasing attention to employee wellbeing. Salaries for entry-level roles typically range from approximately €38,000 to €48,000 gross per annum, with experienced occupational psychologists or senior OD consultants earning €65,000 to €90,000 or more. Ireland's strong base of US technology and pharmaceutical multinationals creates consistent demand for talent assessment and organisational development expertise. The combination of psychological rigour and business applicability makes this qualification attractive to a broad range of employers beyond traditional HR departments.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in recruitment and selection, with AI-driven tools now screening CVs, administering adaptive psychometric tests, and analysing video interviews, areas where occupational psychologists play a critical role in design, validation, and ethical oversight. You will need to understand how algorithmic decision-making intersects with fairness, bias, and employment law, making AI literacy a core professional competency rather than an optional extra. At the same time, AI is unlikely to replace the consultancy, relationship-building, and interpretive judgement at the heart of the profession. Instead, it is creating new specialisms around people analytics, responsible AI in HR, and technology-enabled coaching.
