Comedian & Writer
Kildare comedian and writer of This Way Up.
Aisling Bea grew up in Kildare and showed an early love of performance and storytelling. She went on to study at Trinity College Dublin, where she honed her confidence and curiosity about people and language. Like many creative students, she wasn't following a straight line to a set career — she was building a set of skills that would later come together in unexpected ways.
After college, Aisling took the brave step of trying stand-up comedy, a world where rejection is part of the job. In 2012, she won the prestigious So You Think You're Funny award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — only the second woman ever to do so in its 25-year history at the time. From there she built a career across panel shows like QI and 8 Out of 10 Cats, before creating, writing and starring in her own critically acclaimed Channel 4 series, This Way Up — a deeply personal and funny show she made entirely on her own terms.
Aisling's story shows that being from a small county in Ireland is no barrier to making something the whole world wants to watch. If you have something honest and personal to say, and you're willing to put in the work to say it well, that is enough to build a real career from.
