What does a Scriptwriter do?

As a Scriptwriter you craft original screenplays, television episodes, radio dramas, animation scripts and stage plays, shaping stories from initial concept through to a polished shooting or production draft. Your daily work involves developing characters, writing dialogue, structuring scenes and revising drafts in response to notes from producers, directors or script editors. You collaborate closely with directors, story producers, development executives and other writers in writers' rooms, particularly on long-running television and animation series. In Ireland you may work with broadcasters such as RTÉ, TG4 and Virgin Media Television, independent production companies, or animation studios such as Brown Bag Films and Cartoon Saloon, as well as applying for development funding through Screen Ireland.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Scriptwriter

0:00 / 0:00

You start at half eight in a small home office in Dublin, coffee on, laptop open. Before you write a single word of script, you spend twenty minutes going back through yesterday's notes from the script editor at the independent production company commissioning your current project — a six-part drama for RTÉ. Her feedback flags that your lead character's motivation in episode three feels unclear, and she wants the scene restructured before the producer reads it on Friday. By nine you are in Final Draft, the industry-standard screenwriting software, working through the problem scene. You rewrite the dialogue twice, print both versions and read them aloud to yourself — a habit that catches clunky lines faster than reading silently ever does. The second version is stronger. You mark it up and move on.

Required Education

While there is no single mandatory qualification, most working Scriptwriters in Ireland hold an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree or higher in a relevant discipline such as Creative Writing, Film & Television Production, Drama, or Media Studies, available at institutions including TCD, DCU, University of Galway and IADT. A postgraduate diploma or master's degree in Screenwriting or Creative Writing (NFQ Level 9), offered at institutions such as IADT, UCD and NUI Galway, is increasingly common and gives you dedicated script development time and industry contacts. English, Irish, Drama, and Media Studies at Leaving Certificate Higher level all provide a strong foundation in storytelling, language and critical analysis. Some writers enter through related paths — theatre, journalism, comedy performance or script editing — building a portfolio before moving into professional screenwriting. Screen Ireland's development schemes, short film funding and writers' rooms provide structured professional entry points that do not require a specific qualification but are highly competitive.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Irish Scriptwriters begin by writing short films, fringe theatre or online content while working in related roles such as script reader, story editor or production assistant. Success with a short film or a Screen Ireland development award can open the door to a first television commission or a place in a professional writers' room. From there, writers typically build a track record across multiple projects — gaining credits on series, features or animation — before developing their own original projects as lead writer or creator. Established writers with strong credits may become showrunners, executive producers or set up their own development companies.

AI Impact on the job

AI writing tools can generate outlines, suggest plot solutions and produce rough dialogue drafts, which some Scriptwriters use to speed up early development stages. However, the creative judgment, cultural specificity, emotional authenticity and original voice that commissioners seek remain distinctly human qualities that AI currently cannot replicate reliably. There is growing discussion in the Irish and international screen industries about the use of AI in writers' rooms, with some broadcasters and guilds developing guidelines to protect writers' rights and credits. Scriptwriters who understand how to use AI tools intelligently as a creative aid — rather than a replacement for craft — are likely to have a competitive advantage.
