What will you learn?

This course gives you a practical, hands-on introduction to working in television and film production. You will learn how to operate cameras, record and edit sound, write scripts, and use industry-standard editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Modules cover areas including cinematography, lighting, directing, and post-production. A typical week might involve shooting short video projects on campus, attending editing workshops in a production suite, and critiquing each other's work in group screenings. Many colleges include a work placement element where you spend time with a local production company, broadcaster, or community media outlet, giving you real-world experience of working on set.

Required Education

Entry to this QQI Level 5 course typically requires a Leaving Certificate, though the minimum grade requirements are generally modest and vary by college. Subjects such as English, Art, and Media Studies are useful background, though a specific points score is not required as most ETB colleges admit on the basis of interview and portfolio or personal statement rather than CAO competition. School-leavers without a Leaving Certificate, or those who left school early, may be considered on the basis of relevant life or work experience. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcome and are assessed on their motivation and suitability for the course. This Level 5 award is also suitable for people returning to education through Springboard+ or those changing career direction into the creative media sector.

Career Prospects

Ireland's screen industry has expanded considerably in recent years, with major international productions choosing Ireland as a base and domestic output growing steadily. Demand for skilled crew at all levels, including entry-level and technical support roles, remains solid. Many graduates use this Level 5 qualification as a springboard into degree programmes before entering the industry, while others move directly into freelance or employed roles. Freelance work is very common in this sector, so building a portfolio and professional contacts during your course is important for long-term career success.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence film and television production in meaningful ways, particularly in post-production tasks such as automated colour grading, AI-assisted video editing, subtitling, and visual effects. Tools that generate music, clean up audio, or even suggest edit cuts are becoming more accessible to small production teams. However, the creative, storytelling, and on-set practical skills you develop on this course remain firmly human-led, and most industry professionals see AI as a tool that speeds up technical work rather than replacing creative roles. Staying familiar with emerging AI-powered software will be a genuine advantage as you develop your career.
