Actor & Writer
Roscommon actor, from The IT Crowd to Moone Boy.
Chris O'Dowd grew up in Boyle, County Roscommon, where he attended Coláiste Mhuire secondary school. From a young age he was drawn to performing and making people laugh. After secondary school he studied at University College Dublin before moving to London to train at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), one of the most respected drama schools in the world.
O'Dowd spent years doing small roles and building his craft before landing the part of lovable IT technician Roy Trenneman in Channel 4's The IT Crowd, which ran from 2006 to 2010 and made him a household name. That breakthrough opened doors in Hollywood, where he appeared in hit films like Bridesmaids alongside major stars. Rather than just chasing fame, he came back to his Irish roots and created Moone Boy, a Sky 1 comedy series inspired by his own Roscommon childhood, showing he could shape his own stories as a writer as well as an actor.
Chris O'Dowd's story shows that where you come from — even a small town in Roscommon — is a strength, not a limitation. The skills you build patiently over years, and the stories only you can tell, are exactly what will set you apart.
