Physicist & Broadcaster
Physicist, lecturer and broadcaster.
Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin grew up with a love of science and mathematics, subjects she excelled in through her Leaving Cert years. She went on to study Mathematical Physics at University College Dublin (UCD), one of Ireland's top universities for the sciences. She later completed a PhD, deepening her expertise and going on to lecture at UCD, showing that academic ambition and a love of learning can take you all the way to the front of the lecture hall.
Aoibhinn's path has never been a single straight line — and that's exactly what makes it inspiring. While building her academic career, she won the Rose of Tralee in 2005 and toured the world as lead singer of an Irish traditional music band, proving that science and culture are not opposites. She became one of Ireland's most recognised science communicators through television broadcasting, making complex ideas accessible to everyone. In 2022, she was appointed to chair a national forum on biodiversity loss, presenting its findings to the Taoiseach and later addressing a committee of the UN General Assembly — bringing Irish scientific voices to the world stage.
Your interests don't have to fit into one box — science, music, language and leadership can all belong to the same person. Aoibhinn's story shows that following your curiosity, even when it takes you in unexpected directions, can open doors you never knew existed. Ireland needs people who can think deeply and communicate clearly, and that combination is more powerful than you might realise.
