President & Activist
First woman President of Ireland, now a climate advocate.
Mary Robinson grew up in Ballina, Co. Mayo, and showed exceptional academic ability from a young age. She studied law at Trinity College Dublin, where she became deeply interested in human rights and constitutional issues. She went on to study at Harvard Law School in the United States, broadening her understanding of international law and justice. She returned to Ireland and became a law professor at Trinity College Dublin while still in her twenties.
Mary Robinson entered politics as a senator in Seanad Éireann at just 25 years old, spending two decades championing causes that were often unpopular, including the rights of women and marginalised communities. In 1990, she ran as an independent candidate for President of Ireland — something almost unheard of at the time — and won, becoming Ireland's first female president. After her presidency, she served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and has since become one of the world's leading voices on climate justice, founding the Mary Robinson Foundation. Her career has shown that conviction and persistence can open doors that once seemed permanently closed.
Mary Robinson's story shows that being willing to stand alone on an issue you believe in is not a weakness — it is often where real change begins. If there is a cause you care about, whether in your school, your community, or the wider world, your voice matters more than you think.
