What does a Sustainability Officer do?

As a Sustainability Officer you develop, implement and monitor strategies that reduce an organisation's environmental impact and ensure it meets its corporate social responsibility commitments. You collect and analyse data on energy use, waste, carbon emissions and supply chain practices, then translate findings into practical policies and action plans. Working closely with senior management, operations teams, procurement and external regulators, you ensure the organisation complies with Irish and EU environmental legislation, including emerging Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements. You may also prepare sustainability reports for stakeholders, manage green certification processes and represent the organisation at industry or government forums.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Sustainability Officer

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15. You commute to the mid-sized food manufacturing company outside Naas where you work, arriving just before 8:30. First thing, you open your email and find a query from the Environmental Protection Agency about updated emissions figures for your annual industrial emissions licence return. You flag it as urgent and make a note to call their regional office before noon. By 9:00 you are in the operations yard with a clipboard and a tablet, doing a monthly waste audit. You weigh segregated bins — general, organic, plastics, cardboard — and log everything into a spreadsheet your team built using Microsoft Excel and linked to your sustainability management software. The numbers will feed into the company's quarterly CSRD report, which your organisation must now produce under EU law to disclose its environmental and social performance to investors and customers.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree is the typical minimum route into this occupation, with relevant disciplines including Environmental Science, Sustainability, Geography, Business with Environmental Management, or Civil and Environmental Engineering at institutions such as UCC, University of Galway, UCD, TU Dublin or ATU. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Agricultural Science, Business and Mathematics. Many employers favour candidates who have completed a Level 9 Master's in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Corporate Responsibility or a related field, particularly for roles involving CSRD reporting or policy development. Springboard+ and professional development programmes offered by bodies such as Engineers Ireland and the Irish Business and Employers Confederation also provide upskilling pathways for those moving into sustainability from adjacent roles. No single statutory registration body governs this profession in Ireland, though membership of professional networks such as the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) is widely valued. Relevant QQI Level 6 courses in environmental studies can offer a foundation route, though progression to degree level is generally required for professional-grade positions.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Sustainability Officers begin their careers in junior environmental, compliance or corporate affairs roles, often after completing a Level 8 degree and gaining experience through internships or graduate programmes with large Irish companies, local authorities or semi-state bodies. With three to five years of experience you may progress to a Senior Sustainability Officer or Sustainability Manager role, taking ownership of organisation-wide strategy and CSRD reporting. Further advancement can lead to Head of Sustainability or Director of ESG positions, particularly in multinational corporations, financial institutions or large public bodies. A Level 9 qualification, professional accreditation through IEMA or a chartered engineering body, and a strong track record in regulatory compliance significantly accelerate progression.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are already being used to automate the collection and processing of sustainability data, including energy monitoring, emissions tracking and supply chain mapping, reducing manual workload for Sustainability Officers. Natural language processing tools assist in drafting and reviewing compliance reports, helping officers meet CSRD disclosure requirements more efficiently. However, the core value of the role lies in strategic judgement, stakeholder negotiation and contextual policy interpretation — areas where human expertise remains essential. Sustainability Officers who can critically evaluate AI-generated insights and apply them within complex regulatory and organisational contexts will be best placed to thrive as these tools become more widespread.
