Education

Nicola Coughlan grew up in Galway, where she attended secondary school and developed a passion for performing from a young age. She went on to study at the Galway Film Centre and later trained at the Oxford School of Drama in England. Like many Irish students, she had to weigh up her options after school and ultimately committed to pursuing drama training abroad, which shaped her craft enormously.

Career

After graduating, Nicola spent years auditioning with little success, taking on small stage and screen roles to keep going. Her big break came when she was cast as the loveable Clare Devlin in the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls in 2018, which became a cultural phenomenon in Ireland and beyond. She then landed the role of Penelope Featherington in Netflix's Bridgerton, eventually becoming a lead in the third series and earning both Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA nominations.

Key Lesson

Nicola's path is a reminder that success in a creative career rarely happens overnight — she spent years being overlooked before the right role arrived. If you have a passion that feels uncertain or unconventional, backing yourself and staying consistent matters far more than a straight-line plan.
