Learn to sail on Dublin Bay

"What if you could take a boat out yourself by the end of the summer?"

Why this is so fun

There is nothing quite like the moment Dublin's coastline shrinks behind you and you realise you are the one actually steering. Sailing teaches you to read the wind, make quick decisions and trust yourself under pressure — skills that sneak up on you between tacking and trying not to capsize. Dublin Bay is one of Europe's most accessible sailing spots, with Howth Head to the north and the Wicklow Mountains glinting to the south. By August you could be handling a boat solo, which is a very different kind of confidence to anything you will find on dry land.

Someone who did this

Niamh (25), Donegal Town — dental nurse, grew up beside Donegal Bay but had never once been on a yacht

I booked the taster session at Dún Laoghaire on a Friday night after two glasses of wine, convinced I already knew the sea because I'd grown up beside it.
