As a Casino Dealer you operate table games such as blackjack, roulette, poker, and baccarat in a licensed casino environment. You stand at the game table, deal cards, spin the roulette wheel, and manage the flow of each game according to strict rules and procedures. You collect bets, distribute winnings, and ensure that all play is conducted fairly and in line with gaming regulations. You interact constantly with players, maintaining a professional and courteous manner throughout your shift. You work alongside pit supervisors, security staff, and other dealers as part of a regulated gaming floor team.
Listen: a day as a Casino Dealer
Your shift starts at 7:00 p.m. You arrive at the casino thirty minutes early, sign in, and collect your float — the tray of chips assigned to your table for the evening. Before the floor opens, your pit supervisor runs a brief briefing covering any updated house procedures, the expected busy periods tonight, and a reminder about responsible gambling obligations under the Gaming and Lotteries Act. You check your uniform, make sure your identification badge is clipped on, and take your position at the blackjack table. By 7:30 p.m. players begin drifting in. You greet each person politely and guide newcomers through the basics of the game without making them feel embarrassed. Every move you make is deliberate and visible — you spread your hands flat on the felt when leaving the table so the overhead cameras can confirm you are not palming chips. The cameras are recording constantly and a floor supervisor watches from the pit, the central area from which managers oversee several tables at once.
There are no specific Leaving Certificate subject requirements for becoming a Casino Dealer in Ireland, though Maths at any level and good English communication skills are helpful. Entry is typically gained through on-the-job training provided directly by the casino employer, often combined with an in-house dealer school programme. Garda vetting is mandatory under Irish gaming regulations before you can work on a casino floor. Some candidates complete a short private training course in dealing skills, though this is not a formal NFQ qualification. A smart personal presentation and strong customer-service aptitude are generally more important to employers than academic qualifications.
Most Casino Dealers begin with employer-led training, progressing from a trainee dealer to a fully licensed table dealer once they have demonstrated competence across several games. With experience, you can move into a senior dealer or dual-rate dealer role, which involves taking on supervisory responsibilities at the table. Further progression leads to pit supervisor or floor manager positions overseeing multiple tables and staff. Experienced professionals with management skills may eventually move into gaming operations management or compliance roles within a larger casino or gaming group.
AI and automated shuffling or dealing machines have begun to appear in some international casino markets, though live human dealers remain strongly preferred by players in Irish casino environments for the social and interactive experience they provide. AI is increasingly used in the background for surveillance, fraud detection, and monitoring unusual betting patterns on the gaming floor. Dealers themselves are unlikely to be replaced by automation in the near term, as the interpersonal element of live table games is central to the product. Staying adaptable to new gaming technologies and electronic table formats will be useful as the industry evolves.
