Equine Studies (QQI Level 5)

Environment, Agriculture & Animals

Duration

1 years

Level

FET

Outlook

Stable

What will you learn?

This course gives you a thorough grounding in the day-to-day care and management of horses, combining classroom learning with extensive practical work in yards and stables. You will study equine health, nutrition, anatomy and stable management alongside regular riding and horsemanship sessions. A typical week might include morning yard duties, grooming and feeding horses, attending lectures on equine science, and participating in riding lessons at varying levels. Many programmes include a work placement in a racing yard, equestrian centre or stud farm, giving you real industry experience. Some providers offer specialist pathways in racing, breeding or sport horse management. This is very much a hands-on course suited to students who are passionate about working directly with horses.

Required Education

Entry to QQI Level 5 Equine Studies typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, though specific grade requirements are set by individual providers and entry is generally not competitive in terms of points. Some ETB and Teagasc programmes accept Junior Cycle graduates aged 16 or over, particularly where a strong interest in equine work can be demonstrated. Agricultural science, biology and physical education at Leaving Certificate level are useful but rarely mandatory. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed on relevant experience, such as voluntary or paid work with horses. HEAR and DARE access routes are available at some providers for students with socioeconomic or disability-related circumstances. Practical riding ability or prior yard experience is an advantage and may be assessed at interview.

Career Prospects

Ireland has one of the largest equine industries in Europe, employing tens of thousands of people directly and indirectly, which means demand for trained yard staff remains reasonably steady. Entry-level roles such as groom or stud hand are widely available, though wages at junior level are modest, typically in the region of €24,000–€30,000 gross per year. Experienced and qualified professionals, particularly those who progress to stable management or bloodstock roles, can earn considerably more. Career progression is often tied to practical reputation and accumulated experience as much as qualifications.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence equine health monitoring through wearable sensors and data analytics tools that track horse movement, heart rate and behaviour to detect early signs of illness or injury. Stable management software is becoming more sophisticated, automating feeding schedules, health records and performance tracking in larger racing and breeding operations. However, the fundamentally hands-on nature of horse care means that direct human skill, judgement and physical presence remain essential and are unlikely to be replaced. For students entering this field, digital literacy around equine management platforms is increasingly useful alongside traditional yard skills.
