This QQI Level 5 programme teaches you the practical and theoretical skills needed to groom dogs professionally. You study breed standards, coat types, and the specific clipping, scissoring, and styling techniques required for different breeds. Modules cover safe animal handling, skin and coat health, salon hygiene, and basic canine anatomy. A typical week combines hands-on grooming sessions in a training salon — working with real dogs brought in by the public — with classroom learning on health and safety and client communication. Many courses include a work placement in a professional grooming salon, giving you real industry experience before you graduate.
Entry to QQI Level 5 Dog Grooming programmes is generally open to applicants who have completed the Junior Certificate or equivalent, with no specific subject requirements at Leaving Certificate level. Most ETB colleges ask for a genuine interest in animal care and some may require a short interview or demonstration of ability to handle animals calmly. There are no minimum CAO points as these are FET courses applied for directly through the college or via fetchcourses.ie. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcome and prior experience working with animals — in a kennel, veterinary practice, or pet shop — is viewed favourably. Some providers may ask for evidence of a hepatitis or tetanus vaccination, and a Garda vetting check is standard given the animal-handling element.
Demand for professional dog grooming services in Ireland has grown steadily, driven by rising pet ownership rates and an increasing willingness among owners to spend on pet care. Qualified groomers with strong styling skills and good client relationships can build a loyal customer base relatively quickly, particularly in suburban and rural areas. Self-employment offers flexibility, and experienced groomers with their own mobile unit or salon can earn a solid income. Salaries for employed groomers typically range from approximately €24,000 to €32,000 gross per year, while successful self-employed groomers may earn considerably more depending on volume and location.
AI has limited direct impact on the hands-on craft of dog grooming, as clipping, styling, and animal handling require physical skill and real-time judgement that cannot be automated. However, AI-powered booking and salon management software is increasingly used to handle appointments, customer reminders, and business accounts, reducing administrative workload. Some groomers use AI image tools to help clients visualise breed-specific styles before a groom. Overall, technology is a useful support tool in this trade rather than a threat to employment.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
