As a Fleet Manager you oversee an organisation's entire vehicle fleet, ensuring every van, truck, or car is roadworthy, legally compliant, and operating efficiently. You schedule maintenance and repairs, manage fuel costs, monitor driver performance using telematics data, and negotiate contracts with vehicle suppliers and leasing companies. You work closely with drivers, transport coordinators, logistics planners, and senior management to keep operations running smoothly and within budget. Compliance is central to your role: you ensure the fleet meets Irish and EU road transport legislation, including tachograph rules, Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) requirements, and insurance obligations. You also analyse route efficiency and transportation costs to identify savings and improve service delivery.
Listen: a day as a Fleet Manager
Your alarm goes off at 6:45 am. Before you even leave the house, you check your phone for any overnight alerts from the telematics system — the software fitted to each vehicle that tracks location, speed, fuel use, and driver behaviour. One van has flagged a low tyre pressure warning, so you make a note to pull it from the morning run until it has been checked. You arrive at the depot by 7:30 am, ahead of most of the drivers. You walk the yard, doing a quick visual check on vehicles before they go out. One of the HGV drivers hands you his tachograph printout — the legal record of his driving and rest times — and you file it. Under EU regulations, you are required to keep these records, and a missing or falsified tachograph can result in serious penalties for the company.
A relevant NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 degree in logistics, supply chain management, business, or transport management is the typical entry route; programmes are offered at TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, and TUS, among others. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Mathematics, and Geography provide a useful foundation. A PLC course (QQI Level 5 or 6) in logistics or transport operations can serve as an alternative or stepping-stone route into the field. Many Fleet Managers hold or work towards a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Road Haulage or Road Passenger Transport, which is a legal requirement for transport managers in companies operating under an operator licence in Ireland. Professional membership of bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ireland enhances career credibility. Relevant industry experience in transport operations or vehicle coordination is often expected alongside formal qualifications.
Many Fleet Managers begin their careers in transport coordinator, logistics administrator, or driver roles before moving into fleet supervisory positions. With experience and a CPC qualification, progression to Fleet Manager level is achievable within five to ten years. Senior roles such as Head of Fleet, Transport Operations Manager, or Logistics Director are the natural next steps in larger organisations. Some experienced Fleet Managers move into consultancy, advising businesses on fleet optimisation, electrification strategies, or compliance.
AI-powered telematics and fleet management platforms are increasingly automating routine tasks such as maintenance scheduling, route optimisation, and fuel monitoring, allowing Fleet Managers to focus on strategic decisions rather than manual data entry. Predictive maintenance tools use machine learning to flag potential vehicle failures before they occur, reducing downtime and repair costs. However, the regulatory, contractual, and people-management dimensions of the role require human judgement that AI cannot replicate. Fleet Managers who embrace these digital tools and can interpret their outputs effectively will be significantly more productive and competitive in the job market.
