What does a Head of Compliance do?

As a Head of Compliance you are responsible for ensuring that your organisation operates fully within the legal and regulatory frameworks set by bodies such as the Central Bank of Ireland, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, or sector-specific regulators. You own the compliance plan, oversee internal audits, and lead a team of compliance officers and analysts who monitor day-to-day adherence to policies and legislation. You act as the primary point of contact between your organisation and regulatory authorities, managing inspections, submissions, and ongoing reporting obligations. You work closely with senior leadership, legal counsel, risk management, and business unit heads to embed a culture of compliance across the organisation. Your role requires you to keep pace with evolving Irish, EU, and international regulation — from GDPR and MiFID II to AML directives and Central Bank guidelines.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Head of Compliance

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at your desk in Dublin city centre at 8:15 a.m. and open your compliance monitoring dashboard before anyone else is in the office. Overnight, an automated alert has flagged a potential breach in how one of the firm's client onboarding teams collected consent documentation, so you note it for the morning stand-up. By 9:00 a.m. your team of four compliance officers and two analysts have gathered for the daily stand-up. You assign one officer to pull the relevant records and draft an internal incident report, reminding everyone that the Central Bank of Ireland's reporting timelines are strict and non-negotiable. There is no dramatic atmosphere, just methodical, careful work.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

A postgraduate qualification is typically expected at this level; a master's degree (NFQ Level 9) in law, compliance, finance, risk management, or a related discipline is the most common route. Useful undergraduate foundations include an Honours Bachelor (NFQ Level 8) in law, business, finance, or accounting from institutions such as UCD, TCD, UCC, University of Galway, or TU Dublin. Professional qualifications such as the Certified Bank Director programme, the Association of Compliance Officers in Ireland (ACOI) qualification, or International Compliance Association (ICA) diplomas are highly valued and often expected by Central Bank regulated firms. A Leaving Certificate with strong results in subjects such as Accounting, Business, Economics, and Mathematics provides a solid academic grounding for undergraduate entry. Several years of progressive compliance experience are essential before reaching Head of Compliance level, and the Central Bank of Ireland's Fitness and Probity regime requires formal approval for certain senior roles. Continuous professional development is an ongoing expectation given the pace of regulatory change.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Heads of Compliance begin their careers in junior compliance, legal, audit, or risk roles within financial services, insurance, or a regulated industry, gradually taking on broader responsibilities as a Compliance Officer and then Compliance Manager. Progression to Head of Compliance typically follows eight to fifteen years of sector experience, often supplemented by professional compliance qualifications such as those offered by the ACOI or ICA. In Ireland, the financial services sector concentrated in Dublin's IFSC and surrounding areas offers the most structured career ladder, though similar senior roles exist in pharmaceuticals, energy, and technology. Experienced Heads of Compliance may progress further to Chief Risk Officer, Chief Legal Officer, or executive board positions, and some move into consultancy or regulatory advisory roles.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are increasingly being adopted to automate routine compliance monitoring tasks such as transaction surveillance, regulatory change tracking, and document review, reducing the manual burden on compliance teams. As a Head of Compliance, you will need to understand and govern your organisation's use of AI, ensuring that automated systems themselves meet regulatory requirements and do not introduce new risks. AI-generated regulatory intelligence platforms can assist in identifying relevant legislative changes faster, allowing you to focus your team's attention on strategic interpretation and implementation. The overall effect is likely to enhance rather than replace the Head of Compliance role, as human judgement, regulatory relationships, and ethical accountability cannot be automated.
