As a Laundry Worker you clean, press, and prepare garments, bed linen, towels, and other textiles in a commercial or institutional setting. Your daily tasks include sorting items by fabric type and care requirements, operating washing machines, dryers, steam presses, and ironing equipment, and checking finished items for quality. You work alongside other laundry operatives, supervisors, and in larger workplaces such as hospitals or hotels, you may liaise with housekeeping and nursing staff to ensure a steady supply of clean linen. Attention to care labels, hygiene standards, and turnaround times is central to the role.
Listen: a day as a Laundry Worker
You arrive at the hotel laundry room at 7:00 a.m., change into your work uniform, and check the shift handover notes left by the night team. There are already several large canvas trolleys waiting, loaded with used bed linen, bath towels, and staff uniforms collected from the floors above. Your first job is to sort everything into categories: whites together, coloureds separate, delicate fabrics set aside. You check care labels carefully, because putting the wrong item into the wrong cycle can ruin it entirely. By 7:30 a.m. the industrial washers are running. These are large front-loading machines that take a full trolley load at a time. You measure out the correct detergent and set the temperature according to the fabric type and the hygiene requirements posted on the wall chart. For hotel linen, a minimum wash temperature is required to meet health standards. While one load washes, you transfer finished loads into the tumble dryers or feed flatwork — sheets and pillowcases — into the flatwork ironer, a wide heated roller machine that presses and folds automatically.
No formal qualifications are required to enter this role, and most employers provide full on-the-job training when you start. A Junior Cycle or Leaving Certificate is useful for demonstrating basic literacy and numeracy, though neither is strictly mandatory. Some workers pursue a QQI Level 4 or Level 5 award in Laundry or Textile Care Services through a local Education and Training Board (ETB) or College of Further Education, which can support progression into supervisory roles. No statutory professional registration is required, but workers in healthcare laundry settings must follow HSE hygiene and infection-control protocols. Employers in hospitals, care homes, and large hotels often offer in-house training on specific equipment and HACCP-based hygiene procedures.
Most Laundry Workers begin in an operative role, gaining experience with different fabrics and machinery on the job. With a few years of experience you may progress to a senior operative or team leader position, overseeing quality checks and helping to train new staff. Further progression can lead to a Laundry Supervisor or Linen Room Manager role, particularly in large hotels or HSE-funded healthcare facilities. Some experienced workers move into dry-cleaning management or set up their own small laundry or dry-cleaning business.
Automation and robotics are gradually being introduced into large commercial laundry operations, with some facilities using automated folding machines and conveyor sorting systems. AI-driven maintenance scheduling and inventory tracking are also being adopted in bigger laundries, reducing downtime and linen loss. However, the physical dexterity required for handling varied garment types, delicate fabrics, and unusual items means full automation remains limited, particularly in smaller and specialised settings. Human oversight, quality judgement, and customer-facing tasks ensure that skilled laundry workers will continue to be needed for the foreseeable future.
