Sector
Transport & Logistics
As a Logistics and Distribution Manager you oversee the end-to-end movement of goods, from sourcing and warehousing through to final delivery, ensuring that the right products reach the right place at the right time and cost. You manage teams of warehouse operatives, drivers, and logistics coordinators, setting priorities and monitoring performance against key metrics such as delivery accuracy, stock levels, and cost targets. Day-to-day, you use specialist dispatch and warehouse management software to track shipments, control reorder points, and identify inefficiencies in the supply chain. You liaise closely with suppliers, transport providers, customs agents, and internal departments such as procurement, sales, and finance. Employers across Ireland include An Post, DHL, large FMCG multinationals, pharmaceutical companies, and major e-commerce retailers.
Listen: a day as a Logistics and Distribution Manager
Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. Before you even leave the house, you check your phone for overnight alerts from the warehouse management system. A refrigerated trailer due in from a Rotterdam ferry crossing at Rosslare is running two hours late. You ring the transport provider straightaway to get an updated ETA and flag it to your team. You arrive at the distribution centre just before 7:30 a.m. for the morning briefing with your warehouse supervisor and logistics coordinators. You run through yesterday's delivery accuracy figures on the WMS dashboard, which shows a 97.2% on-time rate against a target of 98.5%. You assign the shortfall as the first agenda item to investigate before the week is out.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, or a related discipline is the typical route into this role; programmes are offered at TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, UL, and DCU among others. A Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree in Business or Transport and Logistics can provide entry to junior management positions, with progression to full management often supported by further study. Useful Leaving Certificate subjects include Business, Mathematics, Economics, and Accounting, as analytical and financial thinking underpins much of the work. A Level 9 Master's degree or a professional qualification such as a Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) qualification can accelerate advancement to senior and director-level roles. PLC courses at Level 5 or 6 in Business or Supply Chain Operations can provide a stepping stone into logistics administration roles, from which you can work your way up with experience and further study. No statutory registration body governs this profession in Ireland, though CILT membership is widely respected by employers.
Many logistics professionals begin as logistics coordinators, warehouse supervisors, or transport planners, building operational knowledge before stepping into a management role. With several years of experience and a relevant Level 8 or Level 9 qualification, progression to Logistics and Distribution Manager is a natural step. From there, ambitious managers can advance to Head of Supply Chain, Operations Director, or Country Manager roles within larger organisations. Professional membership with bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) can further strengthen your profile and open doors to senior leadership.
Artificial intelligence is already transforming logistics through route optimisation tools, predictive demand forecasting, and automated warehouse management systems, reducing manual data processing and improving accuracy. Managers will increasingly be expected to interpret AI-generated insights and translate them into operational decisions, shifting focus from data gathering to strategic analysis. Automation in picking, packing, and sorting is changing the composition of warehouse workforces, requiring managers to oversee more technology-intensive environments. Those who can combine logistics expertise with digital fluency will be best placed to thrive as the sector continues to evolve.
