Outlook
Growing
This programme prepares you to plan, manage and decarbonise transport systems in an Irish and European context. You will study public transport operations, active travel infrastructure, traffic engineering and logistics, alongside sustainability and policy frameworks linked to Ireland's Climate Action Plan. Practical modules cover fleet electrification, demand modelling and geographic information systems (GIS). A typical week combines lectures, software lab sessions and group project work, and you will undertake a professional placement with bodies such as the NTA, local councils or transport operators. Some programmes offer Erasmus+ exchange opportunities, giving you exposure to leading European sustainable mobility cities.

Logistics Associate Apprenticeship
Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate including at least six subjects at minimum O6/H7. Higher-level Maths is typically required or strongly recommended, and subjects such as Physics, Geography and Business are useful. CAO points for this programme are moderate, reflecting growing but not yet saturated demand. School leavers without the required Leaving Cert grades can enter via a QQI Level 5 or 6 FET/PLC course in Engineering, Science or Environmental Studies, with many colleges offering guaranteed progression interviews. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly to TU Dublin through the mature-student route, and HEAR and DARE access schemes are available for eligible applicants.
Demand for transport professionals in Ireland is strong and is expected to grow significantly as local authorities, the NTA and transport operators work to meet the 2030 and 2050 targets under the Climate Action Plan. The relatively small number of graduates with specialist sustainable transport training means you are entering a skills-short market. Starting salaries typically range from around €32,000 to €42,000 gross per annum, rising to €55,000–€70,000 with five to ten years of experience in senior planning or consultancy roles.
AI and data analytics tools are transforming how transport planners model demand, optimise routes and manage real-time traffic systems, and these methods are increasingly taught on the programme. Automated vehicle technologies and AI-driven fleet management are reshaping how operators plan services, so familiarity with these tools will strengthen your employability. However, the spatial, political and community engagement dimensions of transport planning mean that professional judgement and stakeholder skills remain essential and are difficult to automate.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
CAO points (indicative): 280-380 (2024)
* Indicative only: CAO points change every year. Always check the current points on cao.ie and with the institution.
How to apply
Applications for undergraduate CAO courses are made through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February (normal deadline) or 1 May (late deadline); Sustainable Transport Management is a specialist programme primarily offered at TU Dublin, and prospective students should check current CAO listings as availability and course codes vary by year. Those with relevant industry experience or NFQ Level 6/7 qualifications may also explore add-on or direct-entry honours degree pathways by applying directly to the institution.
