As a paralegal you work alongside solicitors and legal executives to prepare files, draft legal documents, and carry out research to support court proceedings and legal transactions. Your day-to-day duties include reviewing contracts, managing case files, liaising with clients and third parties, and ensuring all deadlines for submissions and filings are met. You are likely to work in a solicitors' firm, a corporate in-house legal team, a public body such as the HSE or a government department, or a legal aid service. While you do not represent clients in court yourself, your work is central to the smooth running of every case or transaction your team handles.
Listen: a day as a Paralegal
You arrive at the firm's office in Dublin city centre at half eight, make a coffee, and open your case management system — most Irish solicitors' firms use software such as Keyhouse or Peppermint — to check the day's diary. There are four active files requiring attention before five o'clock, including a conveyancing matter with a closing date tomorrow. You print the requisitions on title, a standard checklist used in Irish property transactions, and flag two outstanding items for the solicitor to review at the morning meeting. At nine fifteen the team meeting runs for about twenty minutes. The solicitor hands you a new personal injuries file and asks you to draft the initial letter of claim to the defendant's insurers under the PIAB process — the Personal Injuries Assessment Board being the body that handles most such claims before they reach court in Ireland. You take a note of the limitation date, which is the legal deadline by which proceedings must be issued, and add it immediately to the firm's diary system so nothing is missed.
A relevant third-level qualification is the most common route into paralegal work in Ireland. Leaving Certificate subjects such as English, Business, and Accounting provide a useful foundation, and a strong LC result improves CAO entry options. Undergraduate degrees in Law (LLB, NFQ Level 8) at universities such as UCD, UCC, TCD, University of Galway, DCU, or TU Dublin are a popular pathway, as are Level 7 programmes in Legal Studies. QQI Level 6 or 7 PLC courses in Legal Studies offered by Colleges of Further Education can also provide entry-level access, particularly to smaller firms. There is no statutory registration body for paralegals in Ireland, though membership of the Institute of Legal Executives Ireland (ILEI) adds professional recognition and credibility to your CV.
Many paralegals begin their careers in general practice solicitors' firms, handling a variety of work across conveyancing, litigation, and family law before specialising in a particular area such as commercial property, employment law, or personal injury. With experience and further study, you may progress to a senior or head paralegal role with responsibility for supervising junior staff and managing complex files. Some paralegals choose to qualify as a solicitor by completing the Law Society of Ireland's Professional Practice Course (PPC), using their paralegal experience to strengthen their application. Others move into legal operations or compliance roles within financial services, technology companies, or multinational firms based in Ireland.
AI-powered tools are increasingly automating routine paralegal tasks such as document review, contract analysis, and basic legal research, allowing paralegals to process large volumes of information more quickly and accurately. Rather than replacing paralegals, these tools are shifting the focus of the role towards higher-value work such as strategic case preparation, client communication, and complex document drafting. Paralegals who develop competence in legal technology platforms and understand how to quality-check AI-generated outputs will be well positioned in the evolving job market. Staying current with developments in legal tech will be an important part of professional development in this field.
