What does a Public Funding Advisor do?

As a Public Funding Advisor you help businesses, community organisations and individuals identify and access grants, subsidies and funding programmes offered by government bodies, Enterprise Ireland, local enterprise offices and EU institutions. You assess a client's financial situation and strategic objectives, match them to appropriate funding streams, and guide them through the often complex application and compliance processes. Day-to-day work involves consulting with clients, preparing detailed funding applications, liaising with bodies such as Enterprise Ireland, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and local development companies, and monitoring approved grants to ensure conditions are met. You typically work alongside accountants, solicitors, project managers and public sector officials to maximise the funding secured for your clients.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Public Funding Advisor

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at your desk in a regional economic development office in Athlone at half eight, coffee in hand, and open your email. There are two queries from clients who spotted new Springboard+ announcements overnight and a follow-up from Enterprise Ireland about a Feasibility Study Grant application you submitted last week. You flag these, update your task list in your project-management spreadsheet, and check the gov.ie funding notices page before the day properly begins. By nine o'clock you are on a video call with a small food-manufacturing company based in Roscommon. They want to expand their production line and have heard about the Regional Enterprise Development Fund. You walk them through the eligibility criteria honestly, which means telling them their turnover is currently below the threshold, and you redirect the conversation toward a Local Enterprise Office Priming Grant instead. It is a shorter conversation than they expected, but an accurate one.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with strong results in subjects such as Business, Economics, Accounting and English is the typical academic starting point. Most employers expect at least an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as Business, Finance, Public Administration, or Economic Policy, available at universities such as UCD, DCU, UCC and technological universities including TU Dublin and ATU. Some entrants hold a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree combined with significant relevant work experience in enterprise support or financial advisory roles. A postgraduate qualification at NFQ Level 9, such as a Masters in Business, Public Policy or Financial Services, is advantageous for specialist or senior roles. There is no single statutory registration body for this profession, though membership of relevant professional bodies such as Chartered Accountants Ireland or the Institute of Banking can strengthen your credibility with clients.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Public Funding Advisors begin their careers in roles such as enterprise support officer, grants administrator or business development executive within a Local Enterprise Office, county council or development agency. With several years of experience, advisors move into more senior advisory or account management roles within consultancies or bodies such as Enterprise Ireland, often specialising in particular sectors or funding streams such as R&D, rural development or social enterprise. Senior advisors may progress to team lead or director-level positions within funding consultancies, or move into public sector programme management roles shaping how funding schemes are designed and administered. Some experienced advisors establish their own independent funding consultancy practices, serving SMEs, charities and community organisations across Ireland.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are increasingly used to scan and summarise large volumes of funding scheme documentation, helping advisors identify relevant opportunities more quickly and reducing time spent on routine research. Automated systems can assist with drafting initial sections of funding applications and checking compliance against eligibility criteria, improving efficiency and reducing errors. However, the core advisory relationship — understanding a client's unique needs, building trust and negotiating with funding bodies — remains firmly human-centred and difficult to replicate with AI. Advisors who adopt AI productivity tools effectively while maintaining strong interpersonal and analytical skills are likely to manage larger client portfolios and deliver greater value.
