What will you learn?

This QQI Level 5 PLC course gives you a practical foundation in caring for people in community and healthcare settings. You study topics such as anatomy and physiology, infection prevention, safe moving and handling, and the principles of person-centred care. A significant part of the programme involves supervised work placement — typically 150 or more hours — in settings like day centres, residential care homes, disability services, or community health teams. In a typical week you attend classroom-based lessons, skills demonstrations in a simulated care environment, and reflective learning sessions. The course suits people who want to enter the workforce quickly as a care assistant or who plan to progress to nursing, social care, or allied health programmes at Level 7 or 8.

Required Education

Entry is generally open to applicants who have completed the Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate, though individual colleges may set their own minimum requirements. Leaving Certificate applicants typically need passes in English and a number of other subjects; Higher Level grades are not normally required for entry at this level. No specific Leaving Certificate subjects are mandatory, but Biology, Home Economics, or SPHE can be useful preparation. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) are welcomed by most ETB colleges, and prior care or voluntary experience is an advantage at interview. Places are allocated by individual colleges rather than through the CAO, so you apply directly to your local College of Further Education. Some colleges give priority to applicants who demonstrate a genuine commitment to a career in health or social care.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

Graduate prospects in this field are very strong, reflecting Ireland's ageing population, the expansion of community-based care under Sláintecare, and persistent workforce shortages across the sector. Healthcare assistants and care support workers are among the most consistently recruited roles advertised on Irish job platforms. Starting salaries for healthcare assistants in community settings typically range from approximately €28,000 to €34,000 gross per year, with HSE pay scales offering incremental progression. Experienced or senior care workers with additional qualifications can earn considerably more.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence community healthcare through tools such as remote monitoring sensors, AI-assisted care scheduling, and digital record systems, but the core of this work — hands-on, person-centred human care — cannot be automated. At QQI Level 5, you are unlikely to use AI tools directly, though you may encounter digital care-planning platforms during placement. The relational and physical nature of care work means job security in this field is considered very resilient to AI disruption. Familiarity with basic digital health tools is increasingly expected by employers.
