Health & Social Care
As a Healthcare Assistant you provide hands-on personal care and support to patients or residents in hospitals, nursing homes, community settings and private homes. Your daily tasks include assisting with washing, dressing, feeding and mobility, monitoring basic observations such as pulse and temperature, and reporting any changes in a patient's condition to registered nurses. You work closely alongside registered nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary care team, following clinical guidelines to ensure safe, dignified and person-centred care. Healthcare Assistants play a vital role in maintaining patient comfort and wellbeing across all age groups, from maternity and paediatric settings to elderly and palliative care environments.
Listen: a day as a Healthcare Assistant
Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. You are on the early shift at a HSE-funded nursing home on the outskirts of Cork city, and you need to be on the floor by 7:30 a.m. You change into your uniform, pack your lunch and drive in, signing on with the electronic time-and-attendance system at the staff entrance before heading straight to the handover room. Handover lasts about fifteen minutes. The night nurse runs through each resident on your assigned bay — who had a disturbed night, whose fluid intake was low, who has a GP visiting later. You jot notes on your pocket pad. By 7:45 a.m. you are in the first resident's room, drawing the curtain, greeting her by name and helping her wash, dress and transfer safely from bed to her wheelchair using the hoist. Dignity and consent come first; you explain each step before you do it.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
While there is no single mandatory Leaving Certificate subject requirement, subjects such as Biology, Home Economics and SPHE provide a useful foundation for understanding health and care. The most common entry route is a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support, offered as a PLC course through Colleges of Further Education and ETBs across Ireland; this typically takes one year full-time. Some employers, particularly in the HSE and private nursing homes, accept candidates who complete accredited in-house training programmes aligned to the QQI Level 5 award. A QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support qualification is widely recognised as the standard minimum for employment in regulated care settings in Ireland. Although Healthcare Assistants are not currently required to register with CORU, ongoing policy discussions in Ireland may introduce formal regulation of the role in the future. Progression to nursing is possible by using your QQI Level 5 award to access nursing programmes at Level 8 through the CAO or through the Graduate Entry Medicine pathway at selected universities.
Most Healthcare Assistants begin their careers in HSE acute hospitals, private nursing homes or home care agencies after completing their QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support award. With experience, you can take on senior or lead Healthcare Assistant roles, specialise in areas such as dementia care, palliative care or theatre support, and take responsibility for mentoring newer colleagues. Many Healthcare Assistants use their practical experience and QQI Level 5 qualification as a stepping stone to pursue undergraduate nursing programmes, applying through the CAO to achieve NMBI registration as a Staff Nurse. Continuing professional development through further QQI awards, short courses in areas such as medication management or phlebotomy, and employer-provided training can open doors to more specialised or supervisory positions within care settings.
AI and digital health technologies are beginning to support the monitoring aspects of the Healthcare Assistant role, with tools such as remote patient monitoring devices and electronic care planning systems becoming more common in Irish hospitals and nursing homes. These technologies assist with tracking patient observations and flagging changes in condition, reducing some of the administrative burden on care staff. However, the deeply human, hands-on nature of personal care — providing comfort, assistance with daily living and emotional support — cannot be replicated by AI, meaning the core of the role remains firmly people-centred. Healthcare Assistants who develop digital literacy and comfort with electronic health record systems will be well-placed as care settings continue to adopt new technologies.
