What will you learn?

Pre-Paramedic Studies at QQI Level 5 gives you a solid grounding in the knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in emergency and pre-hospital care. You will study human anatomy and physiology, first aid and emergency response, patient assessment, and the principles of healthcare practice. A typical week combines classroom theory with hands-on skills labs where you practise CPR, patient handling, and the use of basic life-support equipment. Many programmes include a clinical placement with an ambulance service, healthcare setting, or community first-responder organisation, giving you real-world exposure to emergency scenarios. You will also develop communication, teamwork, and professional ethics skills essential for working under pressure in high-stakes environments.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in five subjects, including English. No specific Higher-level subjects are required at Level 5, though a background in Biology or another science subject is a strong advantage and will ease your study of anatomy and physiology. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply without standard Leaving Certificate results and will be assessed on relevant life or work experience, such as volunteering with community first responders or a sports club. Some colleges give priority consideration to applicants under HEAR or DARE access schemes. You apply directly to the college or through the relevant ETB, not through the CAO.

Career Prospects

Demand for pre-hospital and emergency care staff in Ireland remains strong, with the National Ambulance Service continuing to recruit and expand capacity across the country. Completing this Level 5 award positions you well for progression into a registered paramedic role, which carries solid long-term employment security in the public and private sectors. Graduates who proceed to full paramedic or advanced paramedic registration through PHECC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council) enjoy good career stability and opportunities for specialisation in critical care or event medicine.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence emergency dispatch systems, with AI-assisted call-triage tools helping control centres prioritise and route ambulances more efficiently. At the pre-hospital level, AI-powered diagnostic support and wearable patient-monitoring devices are becoming more common in advanced services. However, the hands-on, adaptive nature of emergency care means that human judgement, physical skills, and interpersonal support remain central and cannot be replaced by automation. Familiarity with digital health tools and electronic patient-care records is increasingly expected, even at EMT level.
