What will you learn?

This MA explores the philosophical, legal and political foundations of equality, human rights and social justice. You examine how inequality operates across dimensions such as gender, race, disability, class and sexual orientation, and how policy and law can address or reinforce it. Modules combine critical theory with practical policy analysis, and you develop skills in research, advocacy and writing for change. Many programmes include a placement with an NGO, trade union, equality body or public sector organisation, giving you direct experience of social justice work in Ireland. A typical week involves seminars, independent reading and collaborative projects, and you will complete a substantial dissertation on a topic of your choosing.

Required Education

Entry to this MA normally requires an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree (2.2 or above) in a relevant discipline such as Social Science, Law, Politics, Philosophy or a related Humanities field. Some programmes will consider applicants with a degree in a less directly related area if they can demonstrate relevant work or voluntary experience in equality, rights or community development. A personal statement outlining your motivation and relevant experience is typically required, and some universities conduct interviews. Mature applicants with substantial professional experience in advocacy, policy, trade unions or the community and voluntary sector are welcomed and may be considered without a traditional undergraduate qualification. If you hold a QQI Level 8 award from an Institute of Technology route and have relevant experience, you may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Career Prospects

Demand for equality, diversity and inclusion professionals in Ireland has grown steadily, driven by legislation such as the Employment Equality Acts and the Equal Status Acts, as well as growing corporate and public-sector commitments to EDI. Graduates with policy analysis and research skills are particularly sought after by think tanks, advocacy organisations and government agencies. While the sector is competitive and many entry-level roles are contract-based, a postgraduate qualification significantly strengthens your profile. Progression to senior policy, management or academic research roles is realistic within a few years of graduating.

Impact of AI on this program

AI tools are increasingly used in social policy research for data analysis, sentiment analysis of public discourse and mapping patterns of inequality across large datasets. You will be encouraged to engage critically with AI's own potential to embed or challenge bias and discrimination, which is itself a growing area of human rights and equality scholarship. Advocacy and communications work is being shaped by AI-assisted content tools, though the ethical judgement, lived experience and relational skills central to this field remain distinctly human. Understanding algorithmic decision-making and its equality implications is becoming an important competency for graduates working in policy and regulation.
