What will you learn?

A Fine Art degree immerses you in studio-based creative practice across disciplines including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital or lens-based media. You develop a personal artistic voice while engaging with art history, critical theory, and contemporary practice. A typical week involves extended studio time, critiques with tutors and peers, gallery visits, and seminars on art criticism and cultural context. Many programmes include live briefs, group exhibitions, and opportunities to exhibit publicly, with some institutions offering Erasmus exchanges to European art schools. By graduation you will have built a professional portfolio, developed the ability to contextualise your work critically, and gained insight into how artists sustain a creative practice.

Required Education

Entry to a Fine Art degree normally requires the Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects, including O6/H7 in English; Higher-level subjects in Art, Design, or a humanity are advantageous. Most institutions require you to submit a portfolio of creative work and attend an interview, which carry significant weight alongside your Leaving Certificate results. CAO points demands vary but are generally moderate, with NCAD typically being among the more competitive institutions. If you do not meet standard entry requirements, a QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Art and Design from a College of Further Education can provide a recognised progression route onto many programmes. Mature applicants over 23 may apply through the mature-student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Career Prospects

The job market for Fine Art graduates in Ireland is competitive and often requires graduates to combine freelance artistic practice with related employment such as teaching, community arts work, or arts administration. Many graduates supplement income through NCAD or local ETB part-time teaching, Arts Council bursaries, or residency programmes. Salaries in the arts sector tend to be modest, with arts administrators earning approximately €28,000–€42,000 gross per year and secondary school art teachers earning on the Department of Education payscale. Building a reputation as a practising artist typically takes several years, and networking within the Irish arts community is essential for long-term sustainability.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-generated imagery and generative design tools are rapidly reshaping visual culture, raising important questions about authorship, originality, and the value of hand-made practice. Fine Art students are increasingly expected to critically engage with these technologies, exploring where AI fits within or challenges their own studio practice. Some programmes incorporate AI and machine-learning tools as media in their own right, particularly within digital and lens-based specialisms. However, the conceptual, embodied, and critically reflective nature of Fine Art education means that human creative judgment remains central and is unlikely to be displaced.
